I was at a range today shooting, and there was one fellow there shooting his AR-15. The other shooters there seemed to pretty much be shooting bolt action 30-06's and .308's. Anyway, I soon noticed that whenever the AR-15 guy decided to shoot, which was much more frequently than anyone else was shooting, my ear protection was not adequate.
Hmmm... why are AR's so loud? His rifle was much louder than any of the larger caliber rifles there. He did not have a muzzle break, or anything weird like that.
Are all .223/5.56's that way? Or, would a bolt action, or even a piston gun be quieter?
