I think I want to try one of those square or rectangular shaped halographic sights, on my AK, as opposed to the round scope shaped type. One that looks like a large glass/plastic window with a red or green dot in the middle.

By cheap I mean Walmart Cheap as in under $50.00! Like those 40mm BSA or TASCO sights they sell. I have looked at the "reflex" sights CDNN sells, made by Target Sports $49.00, are they any good?

It's going to be hard to find something reliable and sturdy enough in that price range... if you were putting it on a .22LR, you might get away with it, but for an AK you're going to need to spend a little more.

What I am thinking of is probably not called a Halographic sight (like an expensive Eotech) but rather a red/green dot or reflex sight. I thought that if they were rugged enough to handle the recoil of a shotgun they would work on an AK.

I got a Primary Arms micro green dot for Christmas (That's a good son!).

Took it for a run the other week and worked fantastic!

Not the friendliest adjuster mind you - slot screws for tightening AND adjusting (special screwdriver needed / small knife blade would work)

But for $79 - it held zero, it worked 100%

Don't go to cheap on a red dot unless its going on something shooting 22lr. Cheapest I go now is the Bushnell TRS-25 after buying cheap crap. I have one on my Bulgy AK74 and it it works just fine.

I tried a few airsoft red dots because they where dirt cheap. Fine on a 22lr but it never held zero on any other caliber rifle and I doubt they would last very long. After that my main AR has an Aimpoint M4s with a constant on 8yr battery life with bullet-proof construction. Buy once, cry once.

No doubt there are just junk red dots out there. But there is no reason to pay Aimpoint/Eotech prices for them either.

And - you can get lucky. The bottom line is you can't win if you don't play...

Just a matter of chancing a loss for a win.

That is true but why bother buying a $50 optic having a 50/50 chance of it going bad and then buying another $50 optic to replace it when you could of just bought a $100 model right away that would last a whole lot longer. Buy once, cry once.

Not everyone can afford Aimpoint and the like and I understand that. My Bushnell was under $100 but it is very well made and quite compact. I bought the Aimpoint M4s because I wanted top quality at least once and I do notice the difference.Yes its expensive but it was well worth it IMHO. I especially like that its always on ready to go. BTW,Its not uncommon to spend more for a red dot optic than you do on the rifle.

You don't need to spend a fortune but don't try and get away with a cheap optic unless you only put about 100rds a year through your rifle. I bought a couple of cheap optics, then I learned that they are not just as good. Leave the airsoft products on airsoft guns.

I bought a UTG swatforce red/green dot lasersight for about $30 (cheaperthandirt) and it's had 200 rds though it with no adjustments. It actually kept it's mark better than my buddys' "expensive" holosight. He was so impressed he's buying one for his AR.

I was wary since it was only 30 bucks, but decided to give it a try. Has worked on my AK just fine.
