Which optic for AR: Vortex Strikefire or Aimpoint Comp M?

I have the opportunity to buy both. The Aimpoint Comp M is $225 and its been used, but still works great. Or I can get a Vortex Strikefire, brand new for $115. I have actually fired my rifle with the Aimpoint and it shoots great, I just wish the dot was a little brighter and the battery lasted longer. What would you do?

If you wish the AP dot was brighter & the battery lasted longer don't buy it, it's broken...:wow:

I use both AP & SF and I am impressed with the SF. that being said the AP is more durable and has a better battery system so it doesn't matter if you forget to turn it off. I take the battery out of the SF when not using that AR.

Are you talking about an old school (and discontinued) Aimpoint CompM, or one of the newer CompM2, M3, etc?

If it's an M, then I wouldn't pay $225 for it. I have seen used M2s and M3s for that price, and new PROs for as low as $360.

Yes, the original CompM was not known for the amazing battery life of the newer versions.

The Aimpoint is a little better quality and a better investment.
That being said; I have a StrikeFire on a Mech Tech 40 carbine. It's great but: the red dot could be better defined: when intensity is maximun the dot is not round it's more like an upside down "L" or a backwards "7". Mind you this is only for precision fire at small game or long range targets (150-250 yards with a pistol bullet).
The green dot is round at all intensity levels.

Next time I would probably get the Aimpoint or an EOTech. My AR has a TA-11 ACOG. If I could afford one for the Mech Tech I'd be in hog heaven.

Yah its the original CompM. What do you think would be a fair price?

And the dot is very bright while indoors, however I was at an outdoor range yesterday and it was very sunny, I had to have the dot on either setting 8 or 9 (max) to see it clearly.

Honestly, due to the age, I wouldn't buy it at all. If I did, I probably wouldn't be willing to spend more than $100 on it.

You can find used CompM2's and M3s for around $250-300, and new Aimpoint PRO (newest generation of Comp series) for $360-410.

I like my Vortex Strike fires I run 2 -, one on a 300 Blk an the other on PSA Strikefire Carbine- it came with the AR. Both have been perfect so far. That CompM is old school and according to the link above was made for pistol use not an AR. Two strikes against it. Unless your busting down doors ,running combat course day after day the Strikefire should serve you well! Or spend more a get the Pro.

Are you sure it isn't your eyes? I have an astigmatism and the dot on my Aimpoint looks like a backwards "7" as well. You can tell by taking the sight off the rifle and slowly rotate the sight clockwise. If the "7" rotates with the sight then it's an issue with the sight. If it doesn't then it is the way your eye perceives the dot. My wife also confirmed my Aimpoint dot is perfectly round for her.

Then just use the green dot....that's what I do...green works much better and at lower settings on the SF...

I second this. Save another $200 and buy a Aimpoint Pro. Its about as good a red dot as you can get. The COMP M4 has longer battery life but the Pro is every bit as durable and reliable.

Don't put a junk red dot on a AR, you will regret it.
Do you consider the SF a junk RD? Have you had one that failed? My SF In on my backup rifle and I'm curious how it will hold up as time goes by...

What Plank said.

The Comp M2 is the first of the truly dependable optics. The original M was good, but still died quickly on occasion or randomly killed itself. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for one as a range piece/casual use gun.

Used M2's are everywhere, and new Pro's aren't that expensive.

After taking a look through a vortex, on the rifle of one of the guys I went to rescue, I don't think I'd put anything with the VTX name on any of guns bigger than a pellet rifle.

I was absolutely disgusted with the clarity, and I don't think I could bring myself to drop $100+ on that junk.

Those are some pretty awesome prices you quoted OP, but I'd still say get the Aimpoint PRO. I've never seen this kind of quality for the money (got mine for $375). The optic was worth every penny, and so was the included mount (tough as nails and returns to zero).

The CompM4 is also heavier, larger, and more expensive. The retardedly long battery life doesn't make up for the extra size and weight, IMO.

I had a Vortex Strike Fire, bought it not long after Vortex introduced it. I was in a carbine course and it failed on me. The battery is mounted parallel to the bore so recoil caused the battery to shake in its compartment and break electrical contact. So the effect was my red dot was constantly turning off. Id turn it back on and everything seemed fine until I fired again. I sent it back to Vortex, they sent me a new one but I never trusted it again. The lens clarity wasn't that great as has already been mentioned. I would get the Aimpoint.

I used a Vortex StrikeFire on my AR for a little while. I had the same problem that a previous poster had: turning off under fire. I sent it back, and they said it was functioning fine. Then it happened again. I finally just tightened down the battery cover/housing until it almost stripped out. I was just trying to keep the battery from moving inside the housing, which is what I determined to be the cause of the trouble.

A previous poster also said that the reason they turned off was the design meant the battery was in line with the bore of the rifle. Aimpoints have this design also, and that hasn't happened with any aimpoint I've owned.

I used the Vortex for a couple tacitcal rifle competitions, and it worked fine. That's it though. It worked fine.

I will say this: Vortex has an outstanding warranty, and their customer service was always pretty darn good. They were fast, courteous, and treated me right. Their 'no questions asked' truly was just that. They just said, 'we're emailing you the label, stick it on the box and we'll get it taken care of.'

THAT's the kind of company I like doing business with.

I hate to admit this; Your right, it's my eye.
Intensity will stay on lower setting. I prefer the red here because there is so much foliage- the leaves are starting to change to red so I may switch to green.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I threw away the 2X magnifier for the Strike Fire... that was complete garbage.
