I got two open tags left to fill and this year we can use centerfire handguns so figured I'd take my first deer with either a Sig P226 or my trusty G17. Non-traditional methods start in the morning and I am deciding which 9mm round to use.

My choices are either a 124 gr. plus P, it's a Winchester PDX, or the other choice is a 147 gr. JHP. Any thoughts?

I never took a deer with a pistol before. We are really hilly here and the stand I will be using will make the shot less than 50 yards and in a seated or kneeling position so shot placement won't be an issue. I practice a LOT.

Not the ideal caliber I know but that is what I got to work with.

I would say the same; 9mm is going to be a bit lacking for a deer of any size and a humane kill ; and it is almost certianly going to require a track and a follow up;

You would be better served by a .357, with a good hot load.

Personally, I would not hunt/shoot a deer with a 9mm handgun.

Personal preference and ethics.

I'd get/use at least .357 magnum, and then not beyond 40 yards.

You still think no on 9mm even if I keep the shot under 25 yards? Would think I could do a double-tap with no problem.

I would not use a 9mm handgun for deer. Period.
Even IF you could pull off a 'double-tap'.

What are your local laws, regarding minimum muzzle energy (ME) and/or barrel length????

Again, I'd use nothing less than .357 magnum, and would prefer a .44 magnum IF using a handgun.

I would agree. I wouldn't use anything smaller than a .44 Magnum either. It's going to be a little more stopping power.

I've gotten three deer using a .30 cal M1 Carbine. They ran like I had tickled them with a feather duster.
In every case I did get the deer, but only because I found them. The bullet was enough to kill them, but not STOP them immediately.
The .30 cal carbine round is bigger than the 9mm Luger round. There just isn't enough power there.

ALSO -- You should check your laws. Here in WI we have minimum barrel lengths, bullet velocities, etc. for hunting with a hand gun. A Glock would be ILLEGAL for deer in WI due to barrel length.
That's why I hunt with a Desert Eagle .44 Mag!

Most (actually I think all the current) high end personal protection rounds are designed to meet the FBI test criteria.

So you will not have much if any difference in the 124gr vs the 147gr loads.

As I chose the 147gr because of it being subsonic and I want to run it with a suppressor.... Please use the 147gr and let us know how it goes. Good luck, shot placement is key.

Use Underwood +P ammo probably the 147 Grain JHP, It will work fine for killing deer, You guys in this post crack me up! You act like deer are as tough to kill as a moose! And a 357 Magnum has some magical killing power that a Hot 9mm does not.

So what do the game wardens do make you chronograph your ammo if they suspect your using weak ammo? You know you can buy aftermarket barrels that are longer than 6 inches!

Sounds like a lot of wounded animals to me. Why would you want to hunt deer with a 9mm or any service auto caliber, for that matter?

I think 10mm and 357mag would be minimal.

In Missouri, any centerfire handgun round is legal for deer, even the .32 acp. That said, I would not use a 9mm on them. I have shot three Missouri whitetails with a .44 mag and consider that round appropriate.

Why? Because our rifle season is over and non-traditional methods start in the morning. Hell we can even use an atlatls to take one if so inclined. I also shoot my 9's better than any other caliber I have here.

Gonna take out in the morning with my crossbow and G17, if I get one under the stand out to say 15 yards gonna use my 9mm.

Anybody want to chime in on the the question I asked as to either the 124 gr. plus P or the 147 gr. JHP?

Do you folks seriously think a 9mm won't kill a 80 pound deer at 15 yards? I will be shocked if it goes 5 feet after the shot.

I know it is not the "ideal" round but do any of you hunt?

I'd go with the 147 gr and treat it like an archery shot, no more than 35 yards.

I'm amazed at the people that will carry a 9mm for self defense against a 200+ lb drug crazed felon but then don't think it will kill a 100 deer.

None.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. IF you manage to do this, anyone you tell will go "Wow" to your face, then on the way out the door mumble about what a dooshbag you are for hunting deer with a 9mm.

I want to STOP an attacker, if he suffers..Mneh

I owe it to an animal to kill it cleanly and quickly.

See the difference?
