I am looking for a plinker and something that my wife can shoot easily. The Taurus 94 seems to be the right price and converts easily to 22 mag for protection. I definitely want a revolver. Are Taurus revolvers reliable, accurate?

The Taurus .22 revolvers are reliable & accurate. Have hand mine for 20+ years with tens of thousands of rounds through it. I have only had to replace the trigger spring once. Called Taurus and they sent me a new one in a few days.

Not sure what you mean about "converts easily to 22 mag for protection". They make two separate models. The 941 is a .22 MAGNUM and CANNOT fire .22 LR!!! The model 94 is .22 LR and CANNOT fire a .22 MAGNUM.

These are two separate calibers and the only way you can fire them out of the same gun is if the gun is designed with interchangeable cylinders.

It seems you are right. Thanks for straightening me out. That's what I like about GT.

My 94 was the worst of the hundred plus revolvers I've owned. I bought it new, and after a few dozen rounds it stopped igniting the primers. I sent it back to Taurus, who "repaired" it by giving it a 20 lb. pull with three distinct hitches and enough grit in the action to grind granite.

Get a Smith & Wesson.

I know someone who got one and it's a decent little gun. I just wish the 941 could come with an optional 22LR cyliner that you could change out, if it did I'd likely get one.

It's not high class, but it'll get the job done. I haven't seen hundreds or even thousands of rounds go through one, so I don't know how well they stand the test of time.

I gave my son one for Xmas a couple years ago. Fine solid gun, trigger pull is HEAVY/sucks, other than than it works.

+1 I have a 94 and my only complaint is the DA trigger is heavy. Very decent gun otherwise.

Charter Arms makes a Pathfinder that has a 22mag & 22LR convertable cylinders and is the only DA revolver out there right now that has that option. Charter Arms has even more questionable quality issues than Taurus, and the gun is not cheap (MSRP is around $550).

Another option is to get a Ruger Single Six. Its a single action revolver (aka cowboy gun) that has convertable 22mag /.22lr cylinders. They sell for $400 to $500 and are very good quality.

Honestly I would just get a .22lr revolver and just use Stingers or Velocitors for self defense. Out of a short barreled revolver there is only a difference of 100 to 200fps between .22lr and .22mag.

Worst handgun I have ever owned. It did not fit my hand or my wife's hand and would pinch our fingers(good luck finding aftermarket grips), cylinder would bind/jam, wouldn't eject empties properly and had a terrible trigger. As someone else said - Smith And Wesson

good luck finding aftermarket grips
Easy to do for $5

The Model 85 and the Models 94, 96, 941 etc all have the same grip.
I have both a 94 & a 85 and have switched grips. They also can use
the same holster.

GunsAmerica has some different style, rubber grips for $16

Wolff sells a spring kit that lightens the trigger quite a bit. (go with the M85 kit, or just cut 1-2 coils off of the trigger return spring)

I have two (one's for sale elsewhere here if you care to look). It's .22 S/L/LR only, not magnum. Somewhat heavy double action pull, but a great all around plinker. I'm surprised to hear any grip complaints -- they are a very soft and grippy rubber that I find extremely comfortable. Recoil is amazingly light -- I would say it is perceived to be far less than my S&W and Ruger autoloaders. And having a 9 shot cylinder is nice. I've found all types of ammo to be reasonably accurate (given the short sight radius), and you're hitting soda cans at 50' with no problem.

I love taurus, and not a fan of the 94 so much, triggers seem to vary and the wolf spring kit is not recommended for the 94 and 941, not to say it doesn't work but at rimfire central a lot of people had light primer strikes when messing with the trigger pull. The taurus tracker in centerfire has a great pull for a modern revolver, the rimfire version of the trackers seem to be around 10 pounds, not great but better than most DA/SA Autos. If you shop around gunbroker you can find colt .22's for about 400 and colt triggers are second to none, but many colts only have 6 shot cylinders. So give the taurus tracker .22 a look.

This. Bought a new Taurus 94 snub nose revolver, cleaned it and took it to the range. The cylinder would lock up every once in awhile and I would have to wiggle the cylinder to be able to pull the trigger, or open it up and lock it closed again. Took it back to the gun shop and traded on a S & W 317 Kit Gun and have never looked back.

Yeah, the 317 was twice + as much, but worth every penny. The Taurus 94 is the only gun I ever traded back.

No more "tortoises" for me.

I have a 94 as well. Aside from the long DA trigger pull, I have no complaints. It's a cheap plinker. Buy the Taurus, spend the difference on ammo.
+1 Understand that a Taurus 94 goes for about $350 and every S&W .22lr revolver sells for +$650 (MSRP +$800). While I really like the lightweight-ness of the S&W 317 (11oz) the DA trigger on it is almost as bad as the Taurus. I also don't like paying that much money for a revolver made almost entirely of recycled beer cans.

The new stainless model 63 with the 3" barrel however, looks freakin sweet, until you see the price tag :crying:

Drat, I was thinking of a 941 as a backpack handgun for the wife for camping. It seems the reputation of the 94/941's has not changed much over the years. :(

I like the new KelTec 20shot semi-auto 22mag but I know she won't...
I like the S&W too, but the retail price is a little daunting. I don't think she will go for a SA revolvers either. Hmm...Anybody else make a hicap (lol) revolver?

Well yea. If you don't mind used, you can probably find both H&R and High Standard nine shot revolvers around for a reasonable price. They're not going to be Smith & Wesson 17's but they're workable guns.

I came close to buying a 94 a couple of years ago. I ended up buying a Ruger Bearcat...not because I didn't want the Taurus, but because I wanted a Bearcat. The Taurus seemed "ok" but the Bearcat was a jewel. If your wife has small hands she might like one of those. At the time the BC was about the same price as the Taurus...maybe "a few bucks more."

Shown with a Single-Six for size comparison.

I love my model 94 but as said by others, the trigger pull sucks a big butt.

I think I'll try bcvojak's advice and cut 1-2 coils off of the trigger return spring and see what happens.:dunno:
