I have a PPQ M1 in 4", a PPQ M2 FDE in 4" and a Q5 which has a five inch barrel. For just home protection and range practice you will likely like the 5" barrel a little better. I think that will hold true for most handguns, especially the polymer framed strikers.

Walther makes a standard PPQ 5" as well as the Q5. The better sights on the Q5 and the third magazine (instead of two magazines) are the reasons I went with it over the standard 5" version. Not crazy about the blue colored trigger but.......

For pure range fun I like my Q5 as well as any polymer striker I own or have owned. I would probably like the standard equally as well with a sight change to a fiber optic front. I still have 20/20 distance vision but handgun front sights are a bit blurry so carbon fiber or luminescent front sights stand out better for me.

Good luck with your choice and shoot it in good health.

I had never owned a paddle magazine release handgun until I bought my slightly used M1 PPQ. I immediately liked it. I hit the release with my trigger finger and am slightly faster with that than using the excellent button release on the M2. Walther got the button release right on the M2, better than most in my opinion.

Now I have four Walthers and two VP9s, all with the paddle release. I like the long thin paddles on the PPQs better than the short fat ones on the VPs but they both work well.

I see from your link that the standard 5" Q now comes with a fiber optic front sight, which is a plus for me.

OP, paddle or button release is a purely personal choice. I like the ones I have but some people won't even try one. For range and home use I doubt is matters much and I think you will be surprised how quickly you become used to the paddle.

Let us know which one you choose.

Tuscany, thanks for the reply. As this will be my first handgun (or gun), I don't really have anything to comapre it too. :)

Thanks for your advice on the 4" vs 5".
