Well, for sure maybe all new firearms have been fired before leaving the factory… but let us know about that new old new handgun you have not even fired yet and why/because?

I've got a couple that I haven't fired. A Smith and Wesson 39-2, and a Star Ultra Star, both 9mm's. They're the only two current that I haven't fired, but there have been a number of guns over the years that have come and gone, unfired by me.

Note, I'm not saying I won't shoot them. I just never have. I've owned other Model 39's, so I know what they're like. The Star, I just haven't gotten around to. For now it's mostly an ELMS platform.

I'll probably get around to them one day, but I don't have to shoot a gun to enjoy it.

I happen to like guns and not only do I have guns that I shoot quite a bit, but I also have guns that I enjoy owning just because I like them. I feel no burning desire to shoot those particular guns and while they are in my care, they will stay in the exact condition that they were in when I acquired them.
When I buy a gun that has added value because it hasn't been fired, I tend to leave them alone. Usually I have another of the same brand and caliber, so I feel no special need to shoot that particular one. I currently have around 80 or so handguns and some are just too valuable to shoot anymore.

Many years ago I picked up this S&W Model 19-2 for a song at a gun store. Because it is unfired since it left the factory I have been offered four times what I paid for it. I neither need, nor do I want to sell it and I have another 19-2 that I do shoot from time to time,

I also have a Model 27-2 that I believe is still unfired since it left the factory.

Shooter M27.

Another S&W, this time a model 57.

And last, but not least, I have this Model 29 that I picked up at the same time I got the M57 pictured above.

And my shooter 1959 vintage M29. I have had this particular gun since1980 and it has been carried and shot quite a bit over the years.

Ha-Ha....this time yesterday I had an unfired Remington R1 1911 that had been sitting in the safe for over a year.

But a trip to the gravel pit took care of that. I have a lot of gun that get shot very seldom, but how do you know that it even works if you don't shoot it? I'd be wicked embarrassed if I finally dug out some safe queen to shoot after sitting on it for decades and it didn't go bang.

In the past, I have owned a third or even fourth duplicate of my EDC gun. Sometimes the third or fourth version was purchased and left unfired in the safe. (I remember a couple of Glock 19s, a Springfield EMP 9mm a Walther PPS M2 and a couple of Glock 43s in that role.)

The only unfired gun in my safe at this time is the Mossberg 590 20g that I bought last November, haven't made it out to the outdoor range yet to pattern it. Just hasn't been a priority for me.

I personally couldn’t care less about how the few I own shoot that I never fired. I’ve literally got hundreds of thousands worth of guns I don’t shoot.

If that pisses some people off here or even makes them laugh, so be it. Trust me, I’ve got plenty more that I do shoot. I even store them separately.

That is exactly how I feel. I was wondering how long it would take for the "I have to shoot every gun I own" crowd to chime in. Like you I have many thousands of dollars worth of guns and I really couldn't give a rats ass how many I don't shoot.

I have a ruger 556 that is unfired. I bought it for a specific reason and it will remain unfired. Doesn't even have sights on it.

Everything I own has been fired, but 2 things about that: I don't have all that many guns, and the ones I have don't have any special historic or collector value.

If I had collector guns, I would most likely not use them. But... that is a case where it would be nice to have a display case of some sort to show them off. This thread reminds me of the other thread asking if you display your guns.

I picked up a few extra guns back at the beginning of the pandemic when all we knew was that people were allegedly dropping in the streets in China and Italian hospitals were being overrun.

I realized if the world descended into chaos, I didn't have the right combination of guns to outfit my kids at the same time as my wife and myself. I went so far as buying a few extra firearms, but as things mellowed out, I didn't get as far as test firing them all.

But, mostly, it was an excuse to buy things on my wish list. If I was thinking war/unrest was likely, I should have just bought each member an AR, a G19, and a couple cases of ammo. Instead, I finally got around to buying that .357 lever I always wanted and the Sub2K I was curious about as well as a couple pistols (that have been fired).

How often should i clean unfired gun.
There is nothing to clean from an unfired gun when the factory proofing has been cleared.
What you are doing is preserving. The method depends on what finish the firearm has.
Wood furniture needs different care than the metal action, receiver, barrel and such.
Metal care depends on what alloy, steel, aluminum, or stainless steel. Metal could be plated, there were several plated finishes thru the years, nickel being most prominent. Hard chrome (IMO) is the most durable.
RIG would be my choice for metal protection. "Cleaning" firearms displayed in the open would need a dusting as needed and a wax renewal annually. Museum environment control and encasement would be the less touched the best for preservation.

I am not a museum curator; no gun goes unfired. Some get more range time than others.

I have some unfired pre-ban rifles, a G Series FN and a 7.62x39 Valmet to name two. Because if I want to experience shooting an FN or an AK there are significantly cheaper alternatives to take to the range.

Gen 4-17, 25 year anniversary model. Bought it un fired as nib as can be. It will stay unfired. Bought a Gen 1-17 about the same time, appeared un fired. Wife and I each put two mags thru it, cleaned it and put it away in the Tupperware.

EVERYTHING, else gets shot!

Regards,

How often should i clean unfired gun.
That's a legitimate question - Mike answered it well.

A few of my long guns that I fire rarely do get taken out and wiped down with oil once a year if they haven't been fired and cleaned during the year.

The 3914 has got to be one of best single stacks around. Still a very sought after unit...

I don't own any collector guns, so if they went unfired it is due to time or interest.

I had ordered a suppressor in .22lr and wanted a host (had a Savage rifle, but also wanted a handgun). My .22's were not threaded, so I bought a S&W 22A for cheap with the intent of having it machined. Then the Ruger 22/45 showed up in gun stores, and I bought that, leaving the S&W 22A unfired and unloved. I have a child that may get it when they are ready.

The only other unfired is a COVID acquired AR Pistol build (Anderson with PSA 300BK kit). Ammo prices are nutty, and I don't have the suppressor yet, so it sits unfired going on two years.

But those two unfired guns of mine are common guns (no value beyond what the used gun market will bear, and totally unremarkable!). Theysimply haven't been fired (yet). They are not beautiful collectibles being kept in museum condition for real collector status. I don't have any of those due to costs/priority math!

I've got a few that I've never fired, and those probably never will. Gun captured by my Grandfather in WW2, some early 20th century collectibles, etc. But I don't have any that couldn't be fired if I so chose.

And there's one that I just obtained that I haven't fired yet. I just haven't had time to get to since acquiring. But I'm REALLY looking forward to it...
