I shot another one. Why anyone into shooting won’t is a question I have.
Dry firing is useful. Target shooting is good. Formal training is excellent.
But a GSSF match is about as laid back (except for safety) as you can get. And as cheap. The ammo will cost many as much, if not more. (If you don’t reload)
$35 for years membership and $30 per event. The events are basic. 6 metal plates @8” at 11 yards. From loaded ready (gun 11 rounds, pointed down range, basically at cone. 3-4 runs per category. Max 11 rounds per run. Some limit you to 10 rds per run. Such as 5 to Glock.

You can shoot any stage. You can do your 2nd, 3rd… category after first. Or shoot one category each location, take a break, even shoot other next day. (most matches Sat-Sunday). Heck it costs $30 to shoot at most ranges. Without a dedicated timer, score recorder, target paster.. plus you can compare to average, and Master class shooters.
meet shooters from far away. Some drive hundreds of miles to matches. Very friendly group.
Two HUGE things…. There is a Glock Armorer on site. He rebuilt my G19 last year. Every spring, trigger group, offered extended slide release. (I declined). $$$ in parts, plus expert inspection, cleaning, lube.
Then swag. They had 10 round mags for $10. They were out of 19 but had pile of 17, 21, 22, 43….I had to grab 2. No idea when I will get them home. But good to have couple CO legal ones if they allow me to carry in CO. Plus even if you are not a fast, accurate gun shooter. You have a chance at winning a gun.

I've been shooting GSSF almost since it first started in the early 90's.

Agreed, GSSF is a great way for someone to try a competitive shooting event. Very family oriented and a great group of volunteers that make these events possible. I'll most likely be shooting 3-4 of the matches this season and RO'ing when I can.

Agreed, GSSF matches are fun. I'm good enough to be towards the top of the amateur events but haven't crossed the line to the bottom of the Master class yet. Probably this year. I was running 5 matches a year up until the China Virus came into the area. Always fun, with a chance for a random in the mix.

Its also much easier to sign up or matches. No more faxing your paper copy in before Wednesdays.

Give it a try folks.

I had a lot of fun shooting GSSF for 15 or so years. After getting into IDPA, I started to find GSSF kind of boring though, in that it's always the same. Also, I'd figured out how to make master, and done it, and being "just good enough to make master, but not nearly good enough to ever hope to win as a master" detracts a little from the fun.

I went from having several matches a 2hr or less drive from home per year to just one, and at least for the past couple of years, it's always the same weekend as my local club's monthly IDPA match, so it's been a few years since I've been to GSSF now.

But it’s a great low stress intro to match shooting. Meeting like minded people.

Yes and no. It's about as low stress and undemanding of gun handling skills as competition gets. It seems like a lot of people stress out and have difficulty with the plates. My least favorite part of GSSF is waiting to shoot behind people who choke on the plates. i.e. 30-60s per string, leaving plates standing.

That might of been me making you wait at the plates. I’ll try shooting faster next time.

So they take a minute each time? 5 minutes? Long as they are safe. Encourage them. Next year they will clear them in 30 seconds. Let’s see you cut 30 seconds off your time. ;)
I had a gal with a wagon I had to wait for twice. She had a wagon with @7 guns he shot. I can’t walk fast. So she pulled ahead of me. So I had to wait, and wait, and wait. Oh well.

I can relate to that. On a good day I shoot ok, but no matter how easy the plates are in practice, when I compete I often stress out on the plates and it gets ugly. I still love GSSF though.

Funny thing is other sports I was involved in swimming, powerlifting, martial arts, including a ton of real world physical altercations I never felt that stress or it least it didn't effect me.
