Recently I have seen quite a few people cutting out part of the underside of their trigger guard. Is there some advantage this provides that I am unaware of? Or is it done mainly for appearance? I can't see the logic behind it, but it would not be the first time I have learned something. Thanks!

not sure if you mean the single undercut where the trigger guard meets frame of a double undercut which is actually under the trigger guard.
The first one cut closest to frame is for so you can get your grip lower/under better giving you a less chance of slide bite and more control/ lower bore axis.
The second cut is more a reference point for the support hand/knuckle, this is my understanding at least.
