I looked at a couple of PSA kits recently and the only difference was that one had a 9310 bolt and one had a C158. I doubt it makes any difference, but the C158 is the mil spec, so it has been tried and tested a lot more for a lot longer, so I went with that.

C158 was spec'd in the 50's (60's?). Metallurgy has come a long way since and 9310 is a better metal for a bolt. I have both types of bolts and both work great. Get the cheaper one or the one with the rollmark that makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

That bigger boom needs different steel than poodle shooter?
Yeah...but I think the SAW also uses 9310 in its bolts...

I'm a big fan of Young Manufacturing BCGs but they don't stake their carrier key screws and that makes the milspec crowd wet their pants... :)

Doesn't matter. The C158 costs more because Carpenter charges more for the C158 stock. You should have a spare bolt on hand regardless.

Yes indeed I use them on all my builds with the hard chrome . Tough as nails . Also 9310 is great and excellent for bolts now with modern heat treat protocols it was not as good as c158 10 years ago if you screw the heat treat on 9310 its too brittle Get it right it about the. Best stuff going for strength an even shock resistance

You will have to spend alot $$ in ammo cost to wear either 9310 or c158, so that should not be your criteria.
This is the conclusion I've come to as well.

I used to care about this but having used a Stag Arms 9310 BCG for well over 10,000 rounds since 2008, with absolutely no issue other than rings, I could care less anymore.
