The purpose is to have an attractive, reliable 1911 to take to the range so I can shoot more .45 ACP. I have a .45 polymer gun that I like. I’m looking for the “class” of a 1911 with this one.

But I expect all my guns to be able to serve as a defensive tool if necessary.

Any recommendations for or against this pistol?

That would be a way better gun. All the features you need. Nothing you don't need. I had one a few years ago. It was a 2016, or so model year. Very well fitted. I also bought a well worn one for 355.00 ten or so years ago. Should have kept that one. But the current 2 tone models are supurb. A local gun shop had all models of this configuration. I checked over 3 different guns. All looked very well made. The one I personally would have bought would have been the government or commander in 45. But, after thinking about it a 9MM commander would be a great gun too. Yes, they are very expensive but theres very nice features.
The colt would be a fine choice in my opinion and the colts tend to hold value well. A far better choice than the kimber in my opinion.
Cool. Yeah, I'm looking at a .45 ACP Government size model. I'd be open to a Commander, but I don't intend it for daily carry, so I'm not sure why I would go shorter.

It is pricey. . . but buy once, cry once. I do think I'm going to wait until after the election. Hopefully, once the virus dies down, and Trump gets reelected, firearm prices will crater, and I can swoop in. But we'll see how it goes.
