Been looking around for a 10mm but i'm really trying to figure out the caliber a little more. I would google but i'm looking for user experience information. Any information you can offer would be much appreciated.

P.s. My username doesn't mean I know everything clearly. Although I pretend to most of the time

I bought my first ten millimeter (a Glock 20SF) because I wanted to reload for the cartridge. It just offered such a wide range of options that I wanted to play around with it. There aren't too many pistol cartridges that offer a 100 grain range of bullet weights (from 120 grains to 220 grains).
And, obviously you can make the projectiles go very fast or kind of slow.
So, yay, I tried it.
The first discovery that I made was that the 10mm cartridge is very accurate. Hand in hand with that, I was shooting it out of the gun that Glock designed its large frame variant for, and it showed. The Glock 20SF handles the 10mm very nicely. And, once I had the bug, (no pun intended) I had to have the Glock 29, which admittedly, I found to be quite a handful initially.
Here's a fifteen round group that I put up freehand with my Glock 20SF at fifteen yards. Your results may vary.

Oh hell, i`m sold... any gun that can shoot a target upside down and be THAT accurate, i`m on it!

;)

Pro: power and capacity
Con: recoil and grip size

P220 Elite, SAO, adj sights, front night sight, 5", Lipsey's model
Nice.

Weighed mine again: 44.2 oz. with an unloaded mag inserted. Really tames down the recoil though.

I’d rather have an N frame in 44 mag/special. No rechambering required and still achevies 44 mag ballistics.
Well it doesn't really achieve 44mag, not possible. Powder/case volume matters.

What is the primary use in why you think you need one.

If i buy another 10mm, the G20 would be the one that i would likely look into.
I said that too, after I sold my G29. But I stepped up it seems.

Here is my new 10mm

Pro: You get to act like Billy Bada$$ with your 10mm.

Con: Unless you roll your own or buy expensive boutique loads, it really doesn't do anything for you that .40 can't.

Here's a good article on 10mm.

Expensive Boutique loads? The 10mm stuff at Underwood cost the same as 9x19, 40, and 357 Sig. Using a 35% off code with free shipping, DoubleTap is cheaper than most factory ammo.

Ummm. No.
I just had some boxes of .40 HST’s delivered from TargetSports for less than $20 a box of 50.
The underwood GD’s are $18.50 for 20.
Not even close.

The 10mm is the most powerful service grade chambering for a semi-auto handgun.

The pros:

Wide variety of ammo levels to shoot from mild to wild.
As mentioned....accuracy.
Versatility. You can load for humans, deer, bear, or somewhere in between. You can even load for varmints if you like.
You can carry a Glock 20 on the Appalachian trail and be well prepared for two legged or four legged varmints / threats.
As mentioned... the barrel change ability and interoperability between calibers.
There is not much data on the 10mm out there, but the 10mm mimics the power of one of the most proven handgun stoppers....the .357 magnum.
Capacity in some models (Glock 20 / 40 15+1).
The 10mm is just a blast to shoot.

Cons:

Ammo availability (which is improving).
Ammo expense (improving).
Recoil with heavier loads (can adjust by shooting / carrying lighter loads).
Size of the grip on certain models (G20/21 size frame).\
Can and has been proven to stop large, fanged and clawed creatures. Though has it's limitations and is not up to this task as much as big bore revolvers are as far as chambering (with some mitigating factors such as quicker follow up shot ability).

Either you love the 10mm Automatic cartridge or you don't. Just my 2 cents...

Yes. I actually have a conversation barrel for my 29. I thought I swapped for the 40 barrel the other day and then noticed I shot about 50 rounds of .40 withouta hiccup in the 10 barrel. Range 40 shoots like 9 out of a 10mm

I completely agree. I used to shoot .40 out of my 29 without modification and it shot great. I’ve said before it felt like a 9mm shooting range loads.

Were you using the 10mm mags when you were shooting 40 out of it?
Reason i ask is because i`ve heard people say that they change over to the Glock 40cal mags.

40 mags aren't compatible in g20/29. Maybe in a 1911?

10MM is a treat. My first gun ever, G22.3. Next gun, G20.3. I bought the gun, and set to reloading it, without ever having handled, much less fired one. only factory rounds the 20 has seen is maybe 1-2 mags of Underwood, when it was a nightstand piece.

10MM is fun. I have a 29 as well that does not see much use, but did serve as a carry piece for quite a while.I bought it as my end all be all carry gun. smaller than a 19/23, bigger than a 26/27. Versatile caliber. good solid grip. well it has these things, but real world practicality, it came up lacking. I carry AIWB so especially prevalent, it's like having a brick stapled to one's belt buckle.

I too appreciate the versatility. the 20 would be my woods gun if I lived somewhere worth having a woods gun. the 29 can be carried, loaded for light SD to heavy woods. and everywhere in between. It's been eons, but it'd be the gun I'd take when camping up near Columbia, and hogs are rampant.

10 is just cool, I love the round. Huge fan of the .40cals. I'd like a G40 at some point.

You can’t use a .40 mag in a 10mm, they’re too short from front to back.
Also can’t use a 29 mag in a 20, they’re too short.
But you can use a 20 mag in a 29.

G20 mags in a g29, but 40 are smaller as noted. 40 will feed fine in a 10 mag.
That was always my thought as well too, without actually having any G20 mags here to test. But we know how all the conflicting reports are... one guy says yes, the other guys says no.
I`ve got lots of G29 mags here though... ;)

My thoughts lately, because i have a G29.4, is to get some G20 mags, add the sleeves, get a better grip hold on the gun. Might even ponder the thought of a little longer barrel for it too. Just to carry with me on my tractors when i`m out playing in the woods. And also for some range play.

Imo,mag extensions are a better bet for the compacts instead of std mags & sleeves. Get a +1 or 2 & still have more rds.

#86 ·
Yes, but It seems Dreadnought meant boutique loads vs. off the shelf ammo. Boutique loads aren’t really needed in the service calibers.

I agree. Underwood squeezes a little more speed out of the .40 loads. Not enough to say it matters though.

Thats how my G26`s are set up, pearse pinky extensions on my back up mags, flat base for CCW. But for the G29, i would like to have that added mag height extended further down in my hand. I can handle the G26 type frames and calibers with +P loads all day all night, but the loads i run in my 10mm are quite stout, so a full grip would definitely help me control the recoil even better.

The bottom of the G29 guns tends to pound the lower part of my hand pretty good because there is no support there from a gripping standpoint. So if a longer mag helps stabilize and disperses the recoil over a larger area of my hand, i can shoot more comfortably for longer lengths of time on the range. Something about that 10mm, once you shoot one, you want more of them...lol... i do anyway. My next 10mm will be the G20. I just hope to see it in the G5 format. But i wouldnt turn down the right deal for a G4, either.
I know one thing is for sure. Comparing Underwood in my 29 and in my P220 for recoil, it's not even close. The big Sig makes it feel mild.

Curious what your duty round is & why you don't have confidence in that?

#94 · (Edited)
Duty load is 147 grain gold dot G2. Again, issued, not by choice necessarily. I carry the 29 in an aliengear cloak tuck, I’m 6’3” 235, conceals pretty easily for me.
Yeah I am not a huge fan of most 147gr, I do like the hst +p version, but you have to carry what you are issued. Several of my leo buddies work for agencies out here that issue 147 hst, std pressure but the are satisfied with the results.

The gold dot 147 is a completely adequate round, I have no problem carrying it on duty, although I preferred the 40 we used to have. Off duty, I prefer 10mm, I shoot it very well, and since my family is generally with me and unarmed, I want to carry the most powerful round that I can conceal and shoot quickly and accurately, for me, that’s 10mm.

I am a big 10mm fan. I reload, I rarely carry one, but I do take them to the range and hunting.

The DW Razorback was really the tipping point for me. I was in on the design group at 1911Forums and got one of the limited run of the first 150. Still have it, still shoot it. I have taken an Elk and several Deer with it. I also have a G20SF, a 610 and a AR15 pattern DI carbine (Glock Mags). It is a versatile cartridge that pushes against the window of what is reasonable in a handgun. In the PCC, is has more appeal to me than the 300BO and fits a window for me that is not yet to a .223 level, but more than 9mm.

Comparing it to .357Mag, .41Mag, .40Super, it does well not passing the later two in energy, but close enough that it does not matter much. It is accurate and efficient and runs in an auto without the issue of setback that the .40Super and other hot bottleneck auto pistol cartridges can have.

I did have a G29, and sold it. Just did nothing special for me in that short of a barrel. 5" or more is really where the 10mm picks up IMHO. My 16" carbine, 180s at 1600+ fps and I can hold a 10" plate 10 for 10 at 300 yards.

Justification can be want or need, up to each person. Uses where the 10mm is a good choice? If I was a rural patrol officer, (or game warden) I think I would be happy with the G20 and the Carbine and a rifle caliber bolt gun. For hunting Deer and Pigs in the South and East where ranges are short, great choice. Shooting games like pins or knock down steel that is heavy a very good choice. A sidearm while hunting and excellent choice. If you need good power and portability with a handgun, 10mm is the ticket. A farmer or rancher who does not want to have a long gun, but needs some power, again yes. But for plinking at the range, yeah, I'd not give it high marks for most folks. For EDC, I'd not give it high marks. I'd not suggest it as a one and only pistol cartridge, but it could certainly fill several roles as a 2nd or 3rd pistol caliber. Rimfire aside, if I could only have 2 pistol calibers, it would be 9mm and 10mm.

Mine was my birthday present from my wife, and my Birthday isn't until April! LoL I got to go shoot 5 rounds through it today between rains, and this is just my second time shooting it. I was just checking recoil comparisons. It was all Underwood ammo. Shot from 10 yards, slow shooting off hand.
Shot #1 - 155 XTP
Shot #2 - 180 XTP
Shot #3 - 200 XTP
Shot #4 - 200 Nosler

Again, I say, I LOVE this gun!

I'm sorry for the hi-jack.
I'd like one of those in SAO.
