OK, I will admit that I am a rookie with only a few hours of CCW. I would like to get an OTW holster for my g19 that keeps the gun close and makes that audible click sound when you insert the gun. Might sound silly to you seasoned veterans, but I really like hearing that sound when the gun is securely in place. What characteristics of a holster make that sound happen? I'm guessing the kydex type is what I need. Recommendations?

I'm not so much anti SERPA because of the increased chance of ND. But more because of the quality of the Safariland over the BH SERPA.

No thread with the phrase Serpa would be complete without...

New to EDC or old like me...I totally understand the nice click and security of a holster where the gun is locked in.

I too recommend the Safariland ALS for not only is it secure by holding the weapon in place, but is lighting fast to draw from and keeps your trigger finger nice and staight with nothing to do except engage the trigger once you are up on target and ready to shoot.

I do agree that the ALS is not the most concealable holster in the industry...

Good luck with your search!

He's proof of why dumb*****es shouldn't own guns.

Keep your boogerhook off the bangswitch & you won't shoot your leg

Safariland ALS models.

Not the Blackhawk SERPA models.

I'll second that and suggest one of their new "GLS" (Grip Locking System) holsters, the newer version of the ALS (smaller and rides closer than the ALS apparently ???)

(ALS = Automatic Locking System BTW)

PS - I dumped all of my SERPAs last year (3 of them) not so much after reading about Tex Grebner shooting himself (the guy in the video), but more so reading about them jamming if debris gets caught in their locking mechanism.

Now you are SURE to get people who will argue and SWEAR up and down they've "never had an issue with theirs", but there is more than one instance of people having issues with AD's and the SERPA, and you can't deny anything that has manipulation under stress near a trigger is not the best design either.

Check out the Safariland ALS or GLS, both are a much better design, built better and use a more natural release method.

I have two ALS now I am very happy with and plan to try the GLS once they offer it for the G30SF.

Oh yeah, and they "click" when you put the gun in them too. :)

Thanks for all the replies. I have considered all recommendations. Because of price and recommendation, seems like the safariland is the way to go. I like the gls design and will probably go with that. I am having trouble understanding the choices as far as attachment to the belt. There is a model with belt slide and another with belt slide and paddle. Is that second choice just the way they are bundling accessories? Meaning the holster is used with either the paddle or belt slide? I like the idea of a paddle for comfort while at home. But if I'm going out, belt slide would be closer.

PLMK how if the GLS works out if you get one. As I said I am still waiting for them to build one for the G30, and I am not ready to commit to one for my G19 or 26 as I already have too many holsters for both of those to add another at this point.

I really do want to see if the GLS conceals and carries that much tighter up to the body than the ALS, as that is the one downside to their ALS holster. :(

Thanks -

You'd assume that, but it isn't so. The Safariland holster is bulbous; it's huge; it does not conceal well when compared to other contemporary offerings. If you're planning to open carry, then the Safariland might make sense. If your employer requires you to wear it, then the Safariland might make sense. But if you wish to carry concealed, and you have a choice of holster, the Safariland makes no sense, assuming that concealment matters.

For outside-the-waistband concealed carry, like I said already, look at the at the Raven Concealment Phantom, "minus cut"(zero cant), short shield (aka MagPul cut), with OWB pancake wings.

If you try both the Safariland and the Raven you'll be able to see the difference in concealability.

OP -

Again, same reason I suggested the new Safariland GLS vs the ALS. The GLS is supposed to carry a lot "closer" to the body than the ALS does, but I honestly can not saw how much better it does so as my experience is only with the ALS. I may still try one for my personal G19 but have not done so yet.

Honestly, I am personally looking at trying the Raven myself, as they DO offer it for my G30SF (which SF doe NOT currently in the GLS :( ), and it seems to have a little more tension on the gun like you are looking for than some of the other holsters out there.

I just picked up a used Crossbreed holster that while it is excellent in it's construction and just as good as everyone rants and raves about them, not for me. :( I just simply do not like IWB holsters, and don't like the level of tension it has on the gun when "I" am wearing it. I just am not comfortable in it, as good as I can see it is just as everyone says. :(

The Raven is my next choice, and personally I like the modular set up of all the mounting options they offer with it.

I'll probably try it first, it also has a more rounded shape like a traditional pancake style holster that pulls into the body more.

I'd say try the Raven and then the GLS after that, unless $$ is an issue, in that case there is about a $30 swing between them, with the Raven being the more expensive.
