I am trying to find a method to store a single AR-15 carbine in the master bedroom close to the bed. Mainly to help keep it secure from children, but also to make it at least a little bit harder to steal should a daytime burglar rummage through the house.

All the rifle safes are massive and hold numerous rifles. I've looked at the rifle version of the 'wall vault,' which would help with kids and slow down a thief a little bit, but the wife isn't really on board with that thing being stuck in the wall next to the bed.

Any ideas, thoughts, or opinions? Maybe some sort of lockable hard case underneath the bed that it attached to the wall stud, bed, or something by a length of cable? I don't know....

Any help is appreciated.

Buy a safe. When you do buy a large one and then you can show the wife how pitiful it looks and then she will let you fill it.

 

good question. what we need is a digital lock, like on small handgun cases, that is on a long case (long enough to fit an AR) and could be mounted to the underside of a bed -- to the frame, or rails perhaps. it would not be immediately visible. it would be tuned the the user (the lock that is), it would be accessable with a roll of out bed and a quick reach. what do you think?

even so, i don't believe anyone makes one. but it would work!

 

In my single days a long long long time ago I cut the mattress out to fit my 308 Galil paratrooper (still have) worked pretty good. Just pull up the sheet and your ready to go. Btw at s_x time remove the rifle...

On the<u> inside of your bedroom closet /u> above the door and out of reach from children, install 2 bicycle hooks at the proper distance to hold your AR in the proper places. It's a short step to the closet. A close reach over the door.

 

Buy a footlocker and lock it down in the footlocker. Then bolt the footlocker to the bed frame so the thieves have to dismantle the bed to take it.

Or... just buy a safe.

 

Safes are like $500 at Costco. There isn't even a question here.

 

There are even cheaper Stack-On 16 gun safes with electronic locks on sale here in SoCal with Turner's Outdoorsman. I think they are like $379. At that price, I might pick up another one. I paid a grand for my first 16 gun electronic safe.

 

Yup, buy a safe. I am guessing since you are on a major firearms forum, you have or very likely will more weapons than just the one carbine. Oh, and you can put other stuff in the safe, not just guns....maybe if the wife gets to put a new piece of jewelry in there, that will help convince her.

Kind of depends on setup and situation. a short step to the closet, but if you're in bed asleep when an incident happens, it's wake up/get out of bed/step over the clothes and whatever else on the floor between bed and closet, open closet (and at least in my situation) wrangle through all the clothes my wife hangs in the closet doorway and on the closet door handle, reach up and grab the gun...also, in my bedroom, if someone got in my bedroom, they would be between me and my closet. Not likely, as I have an alarm, and dogs, but there are things to consider for this setup as well. Clearly, though, it might have advantages.

For a long gun in the bedroom, I have envisioned making a compartment (wood or a tupperware box cut out just right; not a safe, but something to keep the kids out) that would attach to the rail of the bedframe, so that the gun would be suspended above the floor, up against the bottom of the boxsprings. Again, some bedframes might not work with this, but mine would. The potential advantages are: easy access (if you're facedown, you could easily work the lock without even getting out of bed), and since it is raised, a bedskirt (ask your wife, girlfriend, or mother if you don't know what this is - I wouldn't have if I never got married) will cover up the gun compartment. One who is inclined could even vacuum under the bed, or store things under it, without revealing the gun compartment.

 

Hanging a rifle on a wall in your closet may be right for you, and it may not. But do not think that "hiding" stuff is an effective deterrent from criminals. Most criminals know EXACTLY where to look, they know where people like to hide stuff, and the place that you may think is the most hidden is probably the first place they will look.

I agree with this.
Just get a safe. Even if it’s a ‘stack on’ type steel cabinet. Bolt it to the wall or floor. As well as guns, you can put jewelry, cameras, important documents and anything of value.
Buy a bigger one than you think you need because it will fill up faster than you think.

If you can't swing a full gun safe (which is one of the wisest investments you can make) I would say one of those $80 light gauge security cabinets that Wally World has during hunting season. You can fasten it to the wall and it has a keyed lock.

We are working on something for shotguns and AR's that will do what you want. Hopefully will be available later this summer if all goes well. Will hold a single gun and will be able to mount horizontal or vertical. Will have a pushbutton lock like our handgun safe.

This is what I do with a shotgun.
I use wooden pegs and hang it above the door in the walk in, out of sight and out of reach of anyone who doesnt know its there.
Easy to get to when needed.
I like to keep my safe locked up all the time, and the old remington 870 is a great defense gun, and not costly enough to break the bank if it gets stolen...

 

Put a lock on a small closet like a coat closet and make it a mini gun room. My opinion is anything less than super heavy duty will be defeated by a determined thief and anything less all the way down to a key locked handle will keep out kids, nosy friends and opportunistic thiefs. You will get a safe eventually though. Best security also includes not telling ppl you have valuable guns.

Another option is to use a couple padlocks all around a hard case and them bicycle lock it to the center of the bottom of your bed. Iys hidden and annoying to get under there and try to cut a lock.

Isn't there a bed that is actually a safe and you put the mattress on top of it and you can slide the mattress off and access the safe underneath?
