S&w 908

So, I tried searching but the wonderful search function on GT kept yielding 'no results' no matter what configuration I typed in S&W 908...

On that note, I just picked up a used 908 in black from my local shop for a price that I was happy with. I was never a fan of the metal framed S&W's and it seemed like every time I handled one it was a police trade in rattle trap. Don't get me wrong, I never shot one to justify my opinion, so I know it probably wasn't accurate to dislike them for that.

The 908 jumped out at me as I prefer black guns vs stainless and I hadn't seen many, if any, black metal framed S&W's in my visits to the shop. I offered a lower cash offer and got two extra mags with it for the cost of one.

The mags had some rust in the springs, and I've cleaned that up pretty well. Should I be concerned and just try to find NIB mags for it? Or is it easier to just find new springs for them?

Is there anything in particular I need to be concerned with in regards to the used 908? It looked pretty good minus some holster scuffs. The guy behind the counter says S&W still warranties these guns, but not if any +P has been run through them. I wouldn't be able to tell myself so I don't know if I'm screwed or not in that category.

I personally thought the DA/SA trigger felt pretty nice for a cheaper gun. I grew up on Sigs so I tend to prefer DA/SA vs striker fired guns, though I shoot my FNS quite well.

Anywho...here she is, please give any insight you might have about this model.

Very nice

The 908 is one of those value series of pistols S&W ran during the 3rd gen production. I believe it's based on the 3913, but has the plastic parts and the squared off slide for lower production costs and a lower retail price.

They are very reliable pistols.
I recall the 3913 vs 908 talks and I think I heard that most of the internals were the same, but the 908 had plastic sights that were a different cut and the slide had less detail put into it.

Makes me think of the Kahr PM9 vs CM9 series.

I haven't had a chance to get to the range with it yet, so I've yet to build a better opinion on what it is capable of. I'd like to grab some night sights for it if it functions well.

Mainly, I was hoping I didn't buy a turd. I'm completely new and ignorant to the S&W 3rd gen pistols.

Not at all. I'm not a 3rd gen expert by any means, but I never heard anything bad about the value line (908, 910, 915, etc). They just have less machine work and some plastic parts, such as the sights and guide rod. It also doesn't have the ambi decocker that some of the others do. If you're a righty, that's probably a bonus anyway.

You got a good pistol.

Congrats!

Well, then I shall see how she handles at the range and consider it a good buy. I'm not on here as much as I used to be, but I know you know your stuff from all the posts I've read thru, so I'll keep an open mind to any future 3rd gen S&W's I come across as well.

Thanks!

You got a good gun. The 908 is the "value series" version of the 3914. The main differences between the 908 and the 3914 are some plastic parts, less machining and no ambidextrous safety. The plastic parts include the recoil spring guide and sights. and can be upgraded if you want although not necessary. Both the slide and frame are a little blockier due to less machining. Here are comparison pictures of a 908 and 3913 slide. The 3913 is the stainless version of the 3913.

The 908 frame also lacks serrations in the front and back of the grip handle.

My 908 has been flawless, enough so that it occasionally sees carry duty. It has a lighter and smoother trigger than my 3904. In all fairness it may just be broken in better though. In short, a very fine pistol.

Bac and I went back and forth about the 915, but he is correct about everything on the 908. While it has less machining, lacks the extra barrel lug, and has plastic internals, it will still serve you very well. Even with the value series you cannot go wrong; the old S&W autos were (and are) one hell of a pistol.

I ordered one of the last brand new 908's Buds Gun Shop offered before running out of stock. This gun is very smooth and accurate and is part of my carry lineup. Never fails to go bang and is an excellent carry gun. It has more holster wear now than the pic shows but it just gets better with age. Yes, you got a good one. :)

I bought my 908 from a family member, he had shot it very little..
Love the 908. I put Hogue wrap around grip's on it. I called S&W and during my discussion with them, I was told that a stainless guide rod was available, they sent me one at no cost..That was many moons ago...
