Recommendations for my Red Rider

Yeah you read that right, I have a raccoon problem and I’m going to solve it with ol’ Red since the wife won’t let me do more

I’m looking for recommendations on ammo for it. Daisy used to be my ‘go to’ but I’m looking at the copper plated stuff and wondering if it would be better for my purpose.

Does it hit hard? Does it jam?

You have a Glock BB gun???

You'll put your eye out, kid.

That aside, a Red Rider air rifle won't solve any racoon problem. The only larger than a rat critter problem that I know was solved with a BB gun was with one of those old timey freon powered machine BB guns. It not only dispatched the garbage eating scalawag, but it also ventilated the galvanized garbage can.

But if you just have to try, see if you can find some +P+ jacketed hollow point BBs.

It should do a good job of making them mad! Not too many ammo options for .177 outside of going with steel over copper.

May need to graduate to a pellet rifle. I’ve got a .22 caliber pellet rifle that does a solid job and they make a “hunting round” for them. Picked it up at Walmart for about a hundred bucks, it’s more than paid for itself for critter control. Isn’t too loud either, or at least my neighbors haven’t complained 😂

Good luck with the trash pandas and don’t shoot yer eye out!

You are going to need more power in an air rifle to discourage a trash panda. The copper BB's are plated. Your red Ryder uses a magnet to keep BB in place until you fire it gamo sells lead BB's but it would roll out of the barrel. I have a Walther air rifle that is the same power level as paper shooters RWS 350 but in 177 that will ruin their day

Your Red Ryder isn't going to permanently solve your problem. And we love shooting our Ryder.

Raccoons are pretty smart and you could, potentially, make enough butt shots that they come to associate your trash cans with a negative experience. But...that's a LOT of ******** popping before you'd change their behavior. A lot. Like a whole lot.

Better to step up in power, and accuracy, to a .177 or .22 dedicated pellet rifle and an optic for head shots. There are many that can provide the accuracy needed. And you'll want to make head shots.

Better yet...get a dog(s). Not too much that these 2 will tolerate on "their" patch.

As a youngster I peppered a few squirrels with a Crossman Pump BB gun. I can attest that a shot to the head from about 20 yards will kill a squirrel. You need to go bigger than the Red Rider. As others have mentioned there are .22 caliber air rifles that will do the job . Traps are pretty effective as well..

A few years back my yard was suddenly over run with chipmunks. They were tunneling everywhere. I ordered two $20 safe traps from Amazon. I was catching 2 or 3 day and relocating to a nearby State park. I was informed that his was illegal and relocating required some kind of license. I broke out my BB gun, I hadn't used it in many years. I turned my back yard in a shooting range, beer cans lining my fence. I got the scope squared away and after about 2 months no more chipmunks. I think I "harvested " 18. I poured concrete down the holes and topped off with dirt and grass seed. My neighbor wanted to pay me to do the same for his yard. I passed.

Now being serious.. That BB gun wont do anything to a Raccoon it will maybe scare it off but i doubt it would even lodge a BB slightly under the skin.. probably sting it a bit maybe annoy it to make it leave but its certainly not going to kill it..

If you're trying to annoy it to death you may succeed and it may go seek less hostile environment.. it may also laugh at you and stick around as it knows you and the BB gun are just a annoyance not a threat. I think people OVER estimate BB guns(like the red ryder style..bigger BB guns are more powerful and easily get the job done) and under estimate Raccoons lol. Either get a larger Pneumatic(pump) air rifle OR a CO2 one thats closer to .22 LR velocity OR a .22 LR with subsonic rounds.

id trap and relocate personally.

Raccoon vermim? Hmmm, the squirrel in the bird feeder here will take 5.2 grains of copper-coated steel square in the body, jump a solid foot in the air when hit, and still come back an hour later for more sunflower seeds. Can't say I've run gel tests or created ballistic charts on local hardware store BB's here, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're going to need more than the mighty BB can give on a raccoon.

I had a gut shot on a bunny in the backyard garden with my ..22 pellet rifle last summer. The damn thing dragged itself under the fence and was pulling itself down the sidewalk that’s adjacent to my fence.i quickly make my way out of the gate and he’s now squealing and leaving a really long blood trail from where he was dragging himself.

I double backed and ran into the garage to grab a shovel and head towards and deliver the final blow Viking style. As I’m scooping him into the shovel, I look up and see this yard maintenance worker sitting in his work truck eating a burrito with the most terrified look on his face.

I looked straight at him, smiled and the put my pointer finger over my lips to imitate the “shhhhh” sign. It was classic, pretty sure dide never blinked.

I was out there later with my wife’s watering can and a push broom cleaning up all of the evidence 😂
