Opinions on a Henry Mare's Leg 22mag

I have shot one. I don’t see much of a point unless you are into riding horses or you have a specific use in mind.

Less accurate that a full size rifle, ammo is more expensive than 22lr, your friend will probably end up owning it and not shooting it much. If he needs to ask, he is better off with another Henry.

The general progression is to shoot several boxes of ammo the day you gat it , then repeat when showing it to a friend or family member, then you 'find" it again 3 or 4 years later. For the most part, interesting and unique, and relatively useless unless youre playing "Bounty Hunter" at Halloween. The real Henry rifle will be much more lasting in your use of it.

Not so much in the 22 but one of the center fires would be better, IMO.

Other than playing "Wanted Dead or Alive" it serves no purpose. If you are just going to play and shoot paper with it, better to have .22 LR. I associate .22 Magnum with something like small game hunting, for which the Mare's Leg looks useless.

IT was so cool when Steve McQueen had one in ???45-70

I would have loved to see Steve McQueen try to stuff a huge round of 45-70 into the tiny loading gate of that Model 1892 Winchester, which might be considered a pistol-caliber carbine.

I recall seeing an episode where he said it was a 30-30, which is also wrong.

But those 45-70 rounds sure looked big on his cartridge belt. Yea, Hollywood!

Cool toy for a rich kid

Or an adult kid

Doesn't serve much more purpose that that

If I was temped to buy a mare's leg Henry it would be in .22 lr. However I'll stick with the H001 rifle in .22 lr. tom. :cowboy:

Personally have no use, have a lot better 10 shot 22's in both smaller handguns and actual rifles, that were a lot cheaper and serve a better purpose.

To each his own of course.

But I have no interest or purpose for guns like the Mares leg or these similar concept new shotguns with the pistol looking stock that Remington and Mossberg (shockwave?) are making.

These don’t float my boat in the least.

I had my Henry Big Boy in .45 Colt out to the range today. Its a fun shooter, and since I reload and cast my own bullets, not much more expensive to shoot then a .22.
The Mare's leg doesn't do anything for me. Just like the Mossberg shockwave. Or AR pistols. Can't see the point.
But I don't begrudge others their toys.

As a horse rider, I see little use for it in that area.

But in the cool AF department and possibly HD it has a home.

And BTW: I have an H001 that's put it's share of game on the table and vermin in the ground.

I think they’re cool and have been tempted to get one in .22mag as well.

Practical? No, but if it’s fun and you enjoy it, do it. Personally I’d rather have .22mag for the extra noise & fire, and a rimfire Mare’s Leg won’t have much recoil.

I have a Henry pump rifle in .22mag and it’s a great shooter and a lot of fun.

A friend of mine bought a Fightlite Raider pistol in .300bo. At first I thought he was crazy, seemed to not really serve a purpose but with subsonic ammo it was actually fun to shoot. And that was twice the cost of a Mare’s leg.

I'm not above buying a gun I know I'll never shoot and I have been very tempted to get one of those things just for "grins and giggles." Even for that though, I'd want it in 22 LR. I'll spring for a gun I don't intend to shoot, but I won't buy expensive ammo to not shoot in it. :)

Maybe if I still lived "out in the country" I'd have one by now.
