Opinion on "MidwayUSA Range Backpack" to carry gear to matches

I am looking for a new range backpack as my reused laptop bag from my college days is tearing apart on the shoulder strap. I have a coupon code from Midway that gets this one for $79:

It also has velcro to add the snazzy 500 patch or whatnot ;-p

Anyone have any experience with it. It looks like it has built in three pistol sleeves and presumably room for more ammo. Enough room for multiple GSSF match entries :) Or your primary and backup gun at an IDPA match?

Good, bad, indifferent on this design?

Or this one, which is marked down to $91 with the "birthday price" coupon.

G.P.S. Tactical 2 Pistol Range Backpack Tan

Despite the "tactical" branding which I can barely stand, it looks very versatile. Even a holder for one's paper targets.

I have a couple of Midway brand rifle cases and a pistol range bag and I really like them. No complaints and they are usually priced right. That bag looks pretty good and you can change how you use it by leaving the accessory/pistol bags in or out, like I do with my Midway bag.

Me? I've lugged around heavy range bags most of my adult life. So, to my mind, a bag with wheels has to be one of the best inventions since non-corrosive primers and smokeless powder!

I, also, happened to think that, by the time you get everything you want or need to the range, a 2 gun bag is gonna be too small. Personally, I've got to go with Tinyman's choice:

GPS Rolling Range Bag, Model 600D @ $128.00. (Ammo is heavy; and the older you get the heavier it becomes. So, the wheels alone make it worth the price!)

By the way, forget the price! You buy one of these things once; and, then, keep it the rest of your life.

Good luck!

Hopefully. My current bag is a Swiss Gear laptop bag that I had at least as far back as graduate school, possibly undergraduate. At the time I used it for my laptop and all the things. I have a smaller laptop bag now for my smaller laptop. Neat thing about this is it doesn't scream gun bag when in the back of the car or going into the hotel the night before an out of town match.

It is convenient at the indoor range though the distance is not great. Usually I only ever take one pistol with me to practice and usually just carry it. The bag is for the support gear, my notebook, ammo I am using preloaded into magazines, and emergency medical supplies. For the big outdoor matches, there can be quite a lot of walking from the car to the bays and between the bays. I like being able to stay compact and not have to depend on wheeling things around. I also ensure I have room for extra water, snacks, basic trauma and CPR gear and I keep it with me the whole day.

I will say. The "range bag" that the NRA sent me as part of my membership is laughably cheap and unusable. The fact I am not even considering using it in this role is interesting. It is a generic thin nylon China-made tradeshow duffle bag with no compartments or support. I didn't join for the stupid bag of course, I did so to ensure I could vote in the board elections to get the reformers on the board.

I’ve had a couple of the duffle bag style. They are well built. My current one has one issue. The swivel part on one end of the shoulder strap is seized up. Im sure it will break at that point eventually

I have way too much weight in it. Lots of brass and lead.

lots of compartments on the outside for eyes and ears. Magazine organizer. Interior has a lift out ammo caddy and a couple padded pistol envelopes / gun rags.

zippers seem good quality. Fabric is durable. Just that weak point in the shoulder strap.

i agree with the poster above about not having a single bag for everything. i generally carry ammo in a tool bag style range bag and a 5.11 sling pack for the miscellaneous range stuff like extra eye/ear pro, cleaning kit, med kit. etc. i will also carry a guitar case or rifle bag for long guns. if im only shooting pistols they can easily fit in the sling pack.

gave up on back packs, carry / range bags years ago. I converted a 3 wheel baby stroller to hump my gear around. Till it rained so hard i had 2-3" of water in the unit. So i went with the Milwaukee pack out system. Wheeled, water proof, AND... makes a great seat when you're not shooting. This is a a basic picture of what they look like . Between the AR and pistol. The amount of mags and ammo one can carry make's it worth the $$. Plus i used ACE hardware coupons and saved around $60.

I have a midway USA dual rifle case with mag pouches, a midway canvas shotgun case, a few pistol mag pouches and a pistol case. I’ve been happy with everything that has MidwayUSA on it. Just remember they are probably not trimming and stitching raw materials in house. I’d bet they source their products from a good manufacturer and just sew their own insignia on it. Maybe you could call Midway and ask where their backpacks are made to give you an idea of the quality. They’ve always been very helpful on the phone. To reiterate, I’ve been happy with anything branded MidwayUSA in the past. Nothing has fallen apart on me, some things I’ve owned for 15+ years.

I like using a folding wagon and one of these Midway pistol cases for each gun. The cases will hold all 10 mags plus an extra box of ammo for any needed reshoots. The wagon is much less strenuous on the back for all day, and you have room for a small folding chair and cooler.

I have that bag and generally really like it. The only downside is that the three pistol cases that go in the bottom are a struggle to fit all three the way I load them. When I take a 19x a 43 and a 44 with six magazines for each as there are loops for it's a little too tight to get all three in. I end up putting the magazines for the 19x in the side pocket. You can force it all in but it's awfully tight. It would have been nice if that bottom compartment that held the three pistol cases were about a half an inch to an inch taller. Range officers at my range even comment on it really liking the looks of it

I decided to go shopping in my own basement. Reduce, reuse, recycle. This is my most recent laptop backpack when I still carried a 15 inch laptop. I have a slightly smaller laptop backpack now.

It has enough space for support gear and two of those 10 magazine sleeves and some target repair centers. Painters tape is always good.

I can scratch this off the list of backpacks for international travel, but that is okay. I have the newer one for that.
