Had this for several years but it needed the stock put on. I had the stock but not a bolt. Finally got everything and put a recoil pad on to lengthen the stock. I plan to get a replacement stock at some point. Rifle belonged to my dad and he used it to set NRA rimfire prone record at Camp Perry in 1953 at 47X. He said he fired the 40 round COF and when time was up range master had him replace target and fired 7 more before dropping a round in the 10 ring.

Rifle is a Ballard in .22 lr with a Eric Johnson 5 star barrel and Lyman Super Target. I plan to shot it in a few days. Should be first time its been fired in over 50 years.

is that an old Unertl scope? What a great rifle, wonderful story and heirloom you have there. Please let us know who she shoots.

That's a Unertl on the right hand gun.

People set records, not rifles. Your dad was a hell of a great shot, with a really nice rifle. :patriot:
Dad shot on the Navy Rifle Team in late 50s. Shortly before he died he said to me " I sure am proud of you". I said "you are"? He said " yes now if you'd just learn to shot a rifle and get rid of them pistols". I've never been much for rifles or shooting paper until last few years. We didn't really have a good relationship but at same time I'd say we didn't have a bad relationship.

To be able to hold the rifle your Dad used to set that record must be special, to shoot it, spiritual.

Thank you for sharing it.

Yep, I was just reading the other day that the tradition is (or was), a shooter who fires all X's keeps shooting until he drop one, however long that takes.

Thanks yeah.....most of the ones I've seen have that tell-tale spring, but I've seen some older ones that didn't. Nice rifles BTW. I grew up shooting an Anschutz Model 54. I had it custom ordered for left-hand. Oddly, the stock was for left hand, but it still had a right handed bolt??!! I wish I still had that rifle though.

Amazing rifle. Keep it in the family and shoot it.

The trick will be to find the best match ammunition to match the guns capability. In the 50's your dad would probably be using Winchester Match: today the best bet would probably be one of the European brands.
The nice thing about rim fires is that you can never wear those barrels out. Much like the lead-bullet rifles from the Pope and Schoyen era, which still show amazing accuracy. That Ballard is a treasure in its own right, your Dads record shooting just adds another layer to it.

Very cool piece, ede. Let's see some targets!
