I've been shooting iron sights on handguns since I qualified Expert in MP school at Ft. Gordon, GA back in the spring of 1970 and earned my first three-day pass (spent at Savannah Beach where I got one heck of a sunburn and swam in the ocean for the first time, which also earned me some jellyfish stings). That's a long time, in my book.
However, having just turned 73 yesterday with the accompanying challenges of my age, including 'floaters' in both eyes, I have to admit that the future of my competitive shooting and self-defense requirements might be changing.
Recent acquisitions include a G34.5 and a Taurus GX4 TORO. Both are milled for optic sights. I've never even tried to shoot with one of these sights, much less invest the dinero they command to get one or two for these pistols. I'm hoping to try one out next Saturday after the BUG match to see how they work.
So, here's my question: If I install one of them on either the Glock or the Taurus and become accurate (and fast?) with it, can I shift back and forth between red dot and iron sights? I've also got a G27.5 and three Gen 1/2 Ruger LCPs for pocket carry and don't want to become deficient with them.
Also, is there a definitive article on how to get started with red dots? I'm a total newbie with these things. What's the best value red dot for my newbie needs? I can't see spending $500 on a sight for a $300 gun (Taurus).
Thanks for the input, and, yes for those who follow my posts ... I have gone off the rails of my 'one-gun' aspirations but hope to get back there at some point in life.
