I got this pistol because I wanted a Colt Officer's ACP type and didn't want the New Agent/Defender Series 90. Pretty sweet guns, something about them that just doesn't quite do it for me. Anyhewwww, came along this M1991A1 Compact (it's a cheaper Officer's ACP) at a very decent price so I snapped it up. It's cheap enough that I might consider having some work done to it. Maybe.

Where do we start? The M1991A1 series came out because Colt wanted to sell some cheap guns to people who couldn't afford the pricier models. Well, it's definitely a "cheap" gun. Plastic mainspring housing, godawful trigger (with lots of grit, creep, overtravel, heavy), thumb safety lever is stiff but positive, the black parkerized finish is even except for the weird, smooth darker black finish on the grip safety. Machining marks everywhere in the innards. It came with no box and only one 6-rounds mag (the original only came with one mag), so I bought 3-each of the blued Metalform 7-rounders and 3-each of the Mec-Gar nickel plated 6-rounders. The Mec-Gar nickel plated mags are smoother than a baby's bottom. I hope that the Metalform mags would work well, but that's what tomorrow's for at the range.

The gun itself has some minor wear on the very top of the slide. Very strange because there's no holster wear that I can determine. Some minor scratches at where the slide lock lever touches the frame above the trigger guard - typical reassembly marrings. Either the previous owner cleaned the hell out of the gun or it didn't have that many rounds through it. Other than the scratch at the frame indicating that the gun had been taken apart a few times, I don't really see any wear at all, not even muzzle blast wear.

Call it serendipity, but I dug out my holsters stash to see what I have that may fit this gun and lo & behold, I have a Galco SOB that was given to me back in 1997 by a college friend who owned a stainless Officer's ACP but sold it for something else.

The holster fits the gun nicely, except for the belt slot that was cut too big. I don't know why Galco did it that way or maybe it was a quality control issue, but the belt slot at the back of the holster fits the 1.5" belt just fine. Just the belt slot at the other end that was too wide.

Of course I have to throw in the gratuituous photo with the CRKT M16 folding knife.

Good luck with that, fnfalman.......

I had that exact same pistol and couldn't get it reliable after doubling my money with 1911 specialist gunsmiths......ended up selling mine. This is not to say that there isn't some reliable ones, but mine sure wasn't. Maybe the reason you can't see any holster wear is because the previous owner couldn't depend on it either.

I do hope you got a good one. If mine were reliable, I'd still have it!

I don't have any experience with the 1991 models, but I do have a Colt Officer's ACP that never leaves my side. It is my back up when I'm working, and my full time EDC when off-duty. Never misses a beat.

I love my Colt.... Hopefully, yours is as good to you as mine has been to me.

Hell, if it were to work with ball ammo, I'll be happy. I don't expect much from this gun other than it adds to my Colt M1911 family stash.

Just ran 100-rounds of aluminum Blazer 230-grain ball ammo through the pistol. No malfunctions, but then none was expected (fingers crossed behind the back). However, the front sight did depart the slide at around 80-rounds. The last three mags were used to practice pointing shooting technique with.

The mags were the original Colt 6-rounders, 3-MetalForm blued 7-rounders and 3-MecGar nickel plated 6-rounders. No malfunction with any mags, not even when I used them to chamber a round then topped the mags off. Two of the MetalForm mags (marked #2 & #3) did not want to fall freely from the mag well. The Colt, the other Metalform (marked #1) and the MecGars had no issues with falling freely.

I also scored a used pair of Esmeralda cocobolo half-checkered grips as well. Beautiful grips.

The gun is capable of some really good mechanical accuracy, but the gritty, creepy, mushy trigger doesn't help at all. Of course, a subcompact pistol isn't easy to shoot for accuracy either. I got cocky after the two tight shot groups at 7-yds and next thing I knew the 10-yds shot groups looked like shotgun blasts (or shot groups from a Glock - teehee), then I had to hunker down and focused on trigger control, breathing and grip. It tightened up right away.

The gun does shoot a bit low at 10-yds. At 15-yds, it's decidedly low unless I aim with the white dots, then it is more or less on elevation. Since that the stock front sight is now well and gone, I'm replacing it with a front sight that's a bit lower so that the point of impact will move up a bit.

Mozambique drills were tough with this gun. I did better with the Colt snubbie wheelguns than with this pistol.

Nice Colt.

Not really. This was the Colt that people were beotching about because of the lack of quality. Believe you me, the fit & finish, especially inside the slide...it's FUGLY!!!

At least this gun is functional with ball ammo. I got it for a song and a dance, so I'm not going to complain too much.

However, it does have potential. I might have the trigger slicked up and possibly change the beavertail grip safety. The current grip safety does dig into my hand a bit. It doesn't happen on the full size guns, but the recoil on this itty bitty gun does drive the stock grip safety into the web of my shooting hand.

Shoulda got a BCM.

Just kidding, that thing is so sweet! Most of all....... that is the exact gun Al Pacino used in "Heat". Ive been trying to find one. Put some Ivory grips on that thing and it will be the exact gun that he press checks in the elevator. Super nice gun man.

I bought one years ago and only put 1 box of hardball through it with no problems. It now sits in the back of the safe.

If you got it for a song, I say give it some TLC and you will want to keep it forever.
