Don't know how else to describe it.

Mine had a metal clip that was clip on the sling swivel on the butt of the rifle and the other end looped through the barrel rifle sling and was held in place by a metal buckle.

I know which sling you're talking about. I've seen them cropped up at various gun show's military surplus sellers or at various Army Navy surplus store. Not as often as they used to be.

This would be a correct battle sling for a 1970s era M16. They used M14 slings since they were plentiful. I use these on my M16 clone builds. These are used USGI M14 slings and the color ranges from OD green to a brownish color. They are great for any retro AR.
