Why I Love the Glock 39 –45 Gap ?
I went to the Range today Friday, 12 August 2011 and shot
My EDC gun the Glock 39 in 45 Gap. I love this gun. It will
Shoot where you aim it. It is flush with 6+1 of 45 Gap and
My backup Magazines are 10 round Glock 37 Magazines.
Which I only put 9 rounds in them so I have 25 rounds total of 45 GAP.
It shoots every time you pull the trigger. It will eat what ever
Brand of ammo you feed it, Hollow Points, FMJ, it don’t matter
This gun is the ultimate carry gun IMHO. Let me explain.

Why do I love this gun so much?
1. It is little as the Glock 26, but w/thicker SLIDE of the Glock 30.
2. It comes with a Extended Slide Release from the factory.
3. It’s a 45. GAP/AUTO/SOWHATO! It makes a 45 size HOLE in the bad guys.
4. It’s a Glock! I love Glocks, simple, shoots every single time. NO FTF OR FTE, JUST SHOOTS!
5. Added Night Sights to mine, all the extras for Glocks are made for the 39.
6. It is one of the smallest double stack 45s weight and thickness wise.
7. It’s a Glock, if gets taken into evidence just buy another one, it’s not a one of a kind specialty gun.
8. For self-defense, I want a big 230gr bullet in the bad guy, biggest hole, smallest package.
9. I can order Ammo online to my door for this gun w/ NO PROBLEM, even law enforcement ammo.
10. The holster for a Glock 30 works perfect for the 39, the 39 fits even better cause its smaller.
11. The Glock 17/19/23 Mag holders are perfect fit for the Glock 37 38 39 Magazines.
12. Easy to Carry, the magazines are lighter and thinner than 45 ACP Magazines.
13. Companies like http://www.comp-tac.com/ build holsters tailor made to fit the GAP Glocks.
14. Police & State agencies are starting to warm up to the 45 GAP, Wonder Why?

I have the Glock 30- 45 APC ….Why not carry that 45 ACP?
Well, it’s a ½ inch longer barrel and about ½ taller if you have the stock 10+1 Magazine. If you want to carry a Glock 21 Magazine with 13 rounds of 45 or (2) for backup Magazines, Be ready to sit back on some thick a** and heavy magazines that weight and thickness is not comfortable.
Been there, done that, got that T-Shirt. The 30 is heavier than the 39 GAP unloaded and loaded. Also the Glock 30 is just plain bigger than the Glock 39. The total weight and thickness of the 30 and it’s Magazines
Are for only the die hard 45 ACP folks to carry. I have the Glock 30 and compared to the 39 not Nearly as good or light a carry. Some folks say on the internet, wow this "45 GAP is a answer to a question nobody asked" well I Did ask???? How can my self defense gun be as small as possible and still be a 45 and make big a** holes? Wow the Glock 39. OK I asked it. I got my carry gun the Glock 39.
And then there is the old question about 45 ACP vs 45 GAP..
Yeap, I went there. It’s basically the same ballistics, but stronger case and better primer. The GAP round is shorter than a 9mm. The 45 is a proven man stopper, GAP or ACP it’s still a .45 diameter hole.
There is another question that just chaps my butt about the 45 GAP. "Will there be any ammo for it in a hundred years?" Here is your sign, if you are old enough to carry a gun right now, and old enough to be tried all the rest and are ready for the best 45 you can carry…. That means you are probably in your 30s-40s-or 50s… if you can order ammo this year to your door lets say 250 rounds or 500 rounds..How many years do you think you are going to carry after today??? Are you going to live to be 130 years old and still carry your 45 GAP.. I don’t think so don’t worry about over lets say 50 or more years from now cause you will be dust by then anyway, your children, or whoever you will your gun to will have to worry bout 45 GAP ammo! I am not the sharpest tool but, I bet 45 GAP AMMO will be around long enough for you to order a couple of hundred rounds in the next couple or years. You think?

I have the Glock 36- 45 APC ….Why not carry that 45 ACP?
Well the Glock 36 is a good try at a carry 45 but let me tell you the downside to it. It’s thin like thinner than a Glock 19 or a Glock 23, thin and that sucker hurts when you Shoot it cause it’s thin. A 45 pushes into your hand not snappy like a 40 so it pushes that thin frame Into your hand. I know a defense gun is not to be a range gun but you have to practice and the Glock 39 is thicker like the 26 and 19 and 23 and just pushes into your hand so lovely. Also another Feature of the Glock 36 I just don’t like is the 6 round magazines. I know the Glock 39 has a 6+1 capacity
For that first flush magazine but try finding a 10 round glock 36 magazine to carry for backup. I don’t think so, with my Glock 39 I have 7 rounds (6+1) if your still wanting to struggle, I have (2) 10 Round Glock 37 magazines (I only put 9 in them though , I like to leave a bit for the spring not to be crushed) even so try to find a (9) round magazine for a Glock 36, you can’t. And if you have a Glock 36 Look at the base plate is that flush with 6 rounds, I think not looks like they designed the gun for 5 then
Just made 6 round magazines for it. And if you put a 7 round extension on the glock 36 looks like the grip is way to long and may cause a reliability issue if you don’t replace the spring in that magazine.
Bottom line the Glock 39 is more comfortable to shoot so = more practice. The Glock 39 has more magazine backup power with the 10 round magazines that fit it beautifully. The Glock 36 is similar in size to the Glock 19/23 so bigger than the baby glock 39. And the double stack design has proven to be better feeding all ammo than the Glock 36’s single stack design.

I DON’T HAVE a PARA WORTHOG - 45 APC ….Why not carry that 45 ACP?
Well it’s about $1000.00, which I could buy (2) Glock 39’s with that money,Though it’s similar to the Glock 39 in size it’s thicker and weighs more than the less expensive Glock 39 and will it go bang every time like the Glock, I don’t know, maybe, but for that price it better.

I have the Glock 23- 40 S&W ….Why not carry that 40 S&W?
It’s not a 45.

I have the Glock 26- 9mm ….Why not carry that 9mm?
It’s not a 45.

Bottom line I want to carry a 45, it’s a personal choice, I work at a prison, I have talked to killers, I never want to pull my gun on anyone, I hope I die and never had to do so, but if I have to defend My life or my family’s or another person, in a kill or be killed situation, I want to shoot to not only stop, the bad guy , I want to shoot to kill the bad guy, cause if you don’t kill him, he will testify against you, and may hunt you down later in this life and kill you for shooting him. So Biggest bullet, smallest package, Several Hits = KILL or be killed.
PS Did I say I really love the Glock 39 in 45 GAP.

I have a G39 also and i really love it! But i think my Ruger LCR 357 will temporary replace it when winter comes.... =)

For the last 3 years or so,everytime I'm in an LGS I check to see if they have a 39.I still have never seen one.I like the thought of one.I've had a G37for a few years and really like it.If they release a Gen 4 39,I'll buy one for sure, even if I have to buy it "sight unseen".When I switched to the 26(9mm)I felt under powered,I can forsee feeling low on chances(rounds)if I buy a 39.

Agree with everything you said and I too have the Glock 39, Glock 30, and Glock 36. Although I like the G36 thinness, it does carry bigger. Typically, if I am goona go the size of the G36, I'll just go with an even slimmer 1911.

As for the whole GAP debate - heres my take. I'm an unbiase,d objective, open-minded person whose only objective is to find what works best for me. I carry it over the others becuase its the best (read smallest) carry gun of the 3 45 glocks - PERIOD. No argument. The people that don't get it or wont entertain it, have some allegiance to 45acp, whether justified or not. Simply put, its the smallest 45 glock makes and that is a fact. In fact, its one of the Smallest 45s on the market, the only thing smaller, IMO is the 5 round kahr PM45 which I also have and is awesome - but I trust the glock more.

I like the GAP. My first Glock was a G37, but I traded it for a used G21.

I miss my GAP. If Glock sells the Gen4 G39, I'm there. They better do it fast, because I'm looking at Kahr's.

By-the-way, I wouldn't feel underpowered/outgunned carrying 6+1, plus reload, of GAP. I carry 15rds of .45ACP when I'm carrying my 1911 and I feel very secure.

G39 has remained my primary CCW for several years
Park it only when higher likelihood of needing extra rounds: Then G30.
No regrets. Would do it again.

BTW: Bought a Kahr PM45 this summer.
Have had lots of troubles with light strikes, FTF, FTE
- Still working on it but it remains in the safe most of the time pending trips to the range after tweaks.
- To date, it has not proven itself roadworthy.
- The G39 remains on the job

G39 with internal guide-rod LaserMax... love it
Dual is (left) Kahr PM45 .45 ACP (now has external laser on it) and (right) Glock 39 .45 GAP

I took my G39 for a test run this afternoon. I ran Speer Lawman 200gr TMJs as well as Speer LE 200gr Gold Dots (the range had 50 rds of the Gold Dots for $29.99!!!) through it and I was impressed with the accuracy and comfort in shooting.

However, my G29SF is currently my EDC CCW of choice. The size difference between the G39 and the G29SF just isn't that significant to me to make me switch to the lower capacity G39. 10+1 rounds of 10mm Auto Double Tap 125gr Barnes X ammo in the G29SF screaming out of a one-half inch longer barrel is more appealing to me than the 6+1 rounds of 45 GAP Speer LE 200gr Gold Dots through the shorter barrel at present.

I may be carrying a Gen4 G37 as a duty weapon soon. If so, the G39 will become a deep concealment back-up weapon due to the magazine interchange with the G37.

A buddy has some property in Alabama that is thick with wild hogs that are destroying his food plots set up for deer. He is setting up a hog trap and I'll have an opportunity to try out some different personal protection handgun calibers and loadings on the living targets soon. I plan to try out the 10mm (Double Tap 125gr Barnes X), 45 ACP (Winchester Ranger T 230gr +P), 45 GAP (Speer LE 200gr Gold Dot), 357 Sig (Winchester Ranger T 125gr), 40 S&W (Corbon 140gr DPX), and 9mm (Winchester Ranget T 127gr +P+) for behind the shoulder body shots and do a post mortem analysis of the effects - one shot to each hog (unless the hog doesn't die in less than two minutes) fired from 5-7 yards. I'll post pictures and notes in a dedicated thread once it is complete.

Based upon the results of that testing, I may change my choice in EDC CCW to the G39.

One thing to note - the specs published by Glock in it's literature and on the website for the G37, G38, and G39 are incorrect. The total weights and slide dimensions were taken from the pre-production pistols - when the thinner/lower slide profile of the 9/40/357 chambered pistols was attempted in the 45 GAP. The final production models ended up with the thicker/taller slide profile of the 45/10 chambered pistols. So, the G39 has roughly a one-half inch shorter slide/barrel with the corresponding reduction in weight of the G29/G30 slide/barrel, but all the other slide/barrel dimensions are the same as the G29/G30.

The introduction of the SF (short frame) model of the G29/G30 reduced the grip circumference of the 45/10 pistols to dimensions more closely used in the 9/40/357 chambered pistols. There would be a very slight difference in weight between the G39 frame and the G29SF/G30SF frame - but not enough to really matter. IF a Gen4 version of the G39 is produced in the future, it MAY result in a smaller grip circumference than the present G39 with none of the backstraps installed.

Here are a few pictures that I just took to show the similarities and differences:

The first picture is my G39 resting directly on top of my G29SF - the G29SF is there, but it is hidden almost completely by the G39
Image

Here is a picture of the G29SF above the G39 - you can see a definite difference in the slide/barrel length
Image

Next, I flipped the G39 over and placed it to the to of the G29SF
Image

This picture from the bottom best illustrates the difference in size of the two pistols in my opinion. However, it still isn't enough to convince me to automatically switch from the G29SF to the G39 as my primary EDC CCW.

Here's a picture to illustrate the difference in grip circumference (not much at all):

Seems like everytime I post in one of these threads I sound like a broken record but here goes;

I'm an old guy who has been carrying daily since 1985. I have owned, shot and carried many, many guns, both autos and revolvers since 1976.

For about 15 years I thought 1911s were the end all-be all of handguns even though I also owned lots of others.

As I got older I began to re-think my insistence on carrying all steel BIG/HEAVY guns.

Like many other "purists" I shunned "plastic guns" when they began to arrive on the scene. I had two Glocks in the late '90s and carried a 19 on the job for two years prior to retirement. However, during that time I was still having Colt 1911s customized and happy as a bug in a rug spending a lot of $$ doing so. Most of it was done for shooting IDPA as well as carrying.

Don't get me wrong...I still like 1911s and would never criticize anyone who wants to spend a bunch on one/one hundred of them.

Last year I bought an armload of Glocks, consisting of new and used Gen III guns.

Most of my shooting buddies honestly thought I lost it and went goofy on them. I still get a ration of good natured kidding from them.

I decided I much preferred the reliability, lightweight, ease of all day long carry, value for the buck, and especially the ease of being able to do all my own work and replacement of parts without having to send them to a gunsmith.

In my 25 year quest to find the perfect carry gun, somewhere along the line I realized I may never be able to find IT. However, IMHO the 39 comes closer than any other gun I have ever shot/owned/carried. I still like to carry/shoot the 37, 26, 21 and 34 and 1911s but for big bore self protection that is easily contollable and easy to carry and accurate, my 39 is the best I have found thus far.

Whew!! that was windy. :whistling::wow:

Well, I installed a Glock OEM 3.5# trigger connector to the G39 - and Pearce +1 baseplates on all of my G39 Magazines. I carried it all day in the holster made for my G29SF/G30SF and it fit fine. The G39 along with the 22 rounds of Speer LE 200gr Gold Dots was very comfortable for the entire day (even when seated) and very easy to conceal with the longer baseplates installed. I plan on getting a couple of G37 magazines to use as extras to replace the original G39 spares in order to increase the total ammo count for concealed carry to 28 rounds.

I also stopped by Georgia Arms this week on a business trip and bought an ammo can of 45 GAP "canned heat" to run through my G39 in an upcoming shooting course. If all goes well during the course, this may become a routine CCW for me after all.

My next bulk purchase of GAP ammo will probably be from Georgia Arms. Let us know your impressions of it.

All they had was 185gr in FMJ or the same in JHP. I would have preferred 200gr FMJ - but I don't think they offer that option at this point.

Looking at the cartridges, it appears that they use once-fired brass with a variety of headstamps. The majority is Speer (makes sense as I suspect a bunch of their spent brass comes from the State Police agencies using GAP), but I see some R-P, and CBC as well. The brass is tumbled to like new brilliance and the bullets appear to have consistency in seating. The ammo can is like new - possibly brand new with no stenciling.

I've used plenty of Georgia Arms ammo in 9mm, .38 Special, .44 Special, and 5.56mm. I have been pleased with all of it except the .44 Special. The lead bullets in their "Cowboy" loads is so soft, the leading in my 629 barrel came out in literal "ribbons"... All the other stuff I've used has been FMJ and it didn't seem very dirty from a powder standpoint. I expect the same for this 45 GAP ammo. $170 for 500 with an ammo can included is hard to beat for target ammo in 45 GAP.

Ummmmm ... nice bait. :wavey:

I shoot my G36 a LOT. And it doesn't hurt me to shoot it at all. :tongueout:
