Must have gun for every gun collection/situation/catergory?

I'm trying to get my gun collection up but I want to buy guns I think I need before ones that I just think are cool. First I'm gonna list some of the current guns I own. The first 3 are guns my dad gave me and are from like the 70s. I know my list is small but I'm only 21 years old and I'm a college student so I don't have the funds all the time.

Currently I have a:

Beretta Jaguar(.22lr pistol)
Marlin 30-30(lever action hunting gun)
Mossberg 16 gauge(bolt action hunting shotgun)
Remington 597(.22lr semi)
Colt 6920(my baby)
North American Arms .22mag(cool pocket carry revolver)
Glock 23(multi-purpose pistol/EDC gun)

The next two things I want to get are a 12 gauge shotgun and a bolt-action .308 or 30-06. I was thinking probably a Mossberg 590a1(of some sort) and a Remington 700(of some sort). My dad wants to get "the same" 1911 he had in Nam(and I hope he does) and a Taurus Judge. If I get enough money I want to get an AK(maybe an Arsenal) and some kind of .22 or .17HMR bolt action rifle for small game. I was also thinking of getting a Ruger LCP because I think their cool and it would make a decent summer carry weapon. Plus it's pretty cheap.

WHAT GUNS DO YOU THINK I NEED TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION? WHY?
(Plus what do you think of the current list?)

P.S. I just got my License To Carry Firearms today. I'll probably go do the Wally Walk tomorrow. I probably won't carry one in the chamber until I carry for a little bit with my MTAC.

my opinion is a bolt action rifle, savage, remington, winchester, etc ..

along with an 870 pump shotgun,

also dont worry about carrying one in the chamber with your mtac,

its a very safe holster and its not going to discharge on you,

I like the idea of buying NEED guns first, then WANT guns.

My NEED list is fairly simple...

12gauge pump shotgun for home defense.

Semiauto handgun also for home defense in tight quarters and when I need to use my other hand. (phone or to help a loved one)

centerfire rifle for long shots for SHTF/marshal law/total collapse of the western world/Armageddon ect ect situations...

Everything else is just for fun after those needs are filled. So far I only have some 12 gauge shotguns and some Glocks. I am looking for an AR or RobArms XCR to fill that gap on my NEED list.

I thought I was a collector but recently realized I have no desire to "collect" guns. Yeah I know...that's blasphemy but I just hate having guns that sit in a safe 99% of their existence. Maybe if I had more disposable income I'd consider collecting but right now its not for me. Maybe later in life, if there is a later? More bullets, beans and blankets and trigger time is my priority right now.

I'm with you man, I'm 20 and in college. I have a Benelli Supernova that is a great 12 gauge, but a little hard to find aftermarket stuff for, and a Remington 700 sps in a .223 because it's cheaper.

I hear great things about the Mossberg 590 so that'd be a good call and the Remington is pretty solid too, those are both good choices.

If I were you I'd check the firearm listings, they are some good deals on lots of different guns, I found a Mac-11 semi auto for $325 that I'm buying now. Gunbroker.com has lots of auctions and impactguns.com has excellent prices.

My goals in guns are,
Bushmaster m4 Patrolman
Colt Python
Tikka t3 tactical
Steyr AUG
Kimber 1911
Some sort of AK
Sig 229
Beretta M9
Desert Eagle
A lot more Glocks

You should look into that list a little.

I think everyone needs a 12 gauge, small revolver, .22 rifle, bolt action in .308, AK and an AR. If it were me, I would get a Benelli M4 Tactical, S&W 642 or 442 NO LOCK, Sako .308 with some nice glass, Arsenal AK and a Colt AR. I would also get a H&K USP in 9mm and a Ruger 10/22. I actually got rid of all of my guns EXCEPT for my P7M8 and Glock 36 to start getting the guns on my list. So far I only have the H&K USPc 9mm stainless and a S&W 442. I had 24 pretty nice firearms all nicely accessorized but decided to go quality over quantity.

+1 on the snubbie revolver - super handy little gun. It's also hard to beat a four inch .357 wheelgun for pure versatility.

#12 ·
Your current weapons and wants list sounds about right. I would recommend a .22 conversion unit for your Glock. I bought one for my 1911 and love it enough I am going to buy one for my Sigs. Other than that it sounds like you have a well rounded collection.

A lot of people say stuff about the Ruger 10/22 but I just don't like them. I had the choice to get one and I got the 597 instead. I might end up buying one in the future but I didn't want to spend a lot on a .22 rifle. I was considering getting a S&W 442 but I think I might want something in .357 instead. Don't want the .22 conversion for the Glock. I rather just buy a Neo of something. I know my list will never end but I want to get certain guns before I buy anything else.

I know this topic is talked about all the time but .308 or 30-06? Why?

PLUS, What is a good rifle for small game?

#14 ·
Your list is a great starting point. In addition to the other posts, I would add a 1911 (Springfield or Colt if really collecting - add Kimber is just shooting), a snub-nose .38 revolver prefeably S&W, and a .357 revolver- S&W or Colt. If your shooting, rather than collectin, then get whatever you find fun to shoot. Shooting is all about having fun. Go to a gun range with rentals and shoot those you MIGHT like and, then, make a decision.

You only have one AR15.

I see a problem there.
I can only shoot one AR15 at a time and the one I have now is pretty nice. I rather put money into this one and buy something else to change it up every once in a while. My big thing about collecting guns is that I want atleast one gun in the most popular calibers. That way if SHTF I would be able to find ammo for atleast one of them.

Nothing like having another AR15 to swap parts with if one goes down or you're trying to build a new one and you need known good working parts to test the new rifle.

You already have mags and ammo, another AR15 to share those mags and ammo with wouldn't be a bad thing.

Glock 23(multi-purpose pistol/EDC gun)
This is how I would have done it starting anew, at your age, with limited funds:

Next Gun:

Buy an AR lower the next time you have an extra $100. SBR it the next time you have an extra $200. THEN worry about all the other pieces. The wait on the stamp won't hurt as bad this way and you open a LOT of doors.

To build depth and avoid FFL fees:

Glock
A threaded 9x19mm conversion barrel for the G23.
A .22 Conversion for the G23.
Night sights if you don't already have them.

AR
A 5.56x45mm upper of your choice for all around use.
A 7.5" or 10.5" 9x19mm upper with mag block and mags of your choice.
A 7.5" or 10.5" .22 LR upper.
A Match/ Precision 5.56x45mm upper with a good optic.

Additional
9x19mm Suppressor
.22 LR Suppressor

Sell all your other guns. You don't need them anymore...

Thank me in 10 years.

That sounds like a decent idea. I was already thinking about getting some conversion barrels and night sights for my Glock. I will NEVER sell any of my guns thought. I don't care if they are a POS I will still keep them and buy new ones.

I think the standard needs are

12 gauge shotgun - pump or semi-auto. Defense, deer, birds, etc. - great all
around gun.

pistol in 9mm or higher

.22 rifle with glass - small game (bolt or semi)

longer range rifle like a .308 or .30-06 with glass (bolt or semi)

After that
wheel gun
.22 handgun
"Assault" rifle, but that could be covered above depending on choice

I said that too when I was 21... lol!

You will reach a point where a POS or a spotty performer in terms of accuracy or reliability will be viewed as a "black mark on the collection."

Remember this post when you get there...

If you're anything like me you'll realize you only have so much space and those old crappy guns will start encroaching on that space.

I think most of us said "I'll never sell a gun" but we all end up going through 2-3 changes of taste in firearms over the years and end up more or less "purging" the firearms that are low man on the totum pole.

I think KalashniKEV's overall point was that the stuff he mentioned could be hard to find/expensive in 10 years and you will be kicking yourself in the ass for not picking it up when the getting was good.

Most of the guns in your collection and the ones you say you want are a dime a dozen and the prices/availability won't change much over the next 10 years.

I have what most would consider a large collection and it's a consideration in pretty much everything I do... just like having a pet.

I usually make good decisions, so I have no interest in getting rid of my fine, quality stuff though. I'm also pretty realistic and outside of self defense I don't have strokejob SHTF fantasies.

What I DO have is a "Travel Kit" that I can go on the road with for a long period of time that will meet all my needs for power, speed, accuracy, and overall performace.

What you see above (minus suppressors) is my travel kit. I manage to cram it all into a Pelican 1700 and with a taclight and a few other goodies, it pretty much does anything you can imagine... and better than anything else you can find.

Nice collection so far!:wow:

First, get an AK as soon as possible!!!! I reccomend the Yugo M70AB2 Underfolder. Also, the Romanian GP WASR 10/63s are great guns, just not as high end as others, but they work just fine and are less expensive!!!

You also need a .357 Magnum. The Ruger GP100 is nice, but the S&W 686 is NICER!!!!

12 gauge? Remington 870 all the way!!!!!

You need a 9mm!!! Either get a conversion barrel for your G23 or look into getting a Beretta 92 or similar. My reccomendation is to wait for the Bersa BP9cc though because you could also use it for CCW (it's a single stack 9mm due out in early 2010!).

I have been licensed to carry since 1991 but like you, was reluctant to carry with one in the chamber, until I started carrying a revolver. That fear went away pretty quick and now I have no problem carrying my Glock 27 loaded and ready to rock!!!

You'll get used to it.

Good luck and keep on collecting!!!!

IMO the big question is "Do You Hunt?" if so that adds a whole lot of irons to the fire that needs to be addressed.

Another question would be "Do you consider yourself a survivalist/prepper? Do you or would you like to prepare for SHTF?"

Your collection to date:

Beretta Jaguar(.22lr pistol)
Marlin 30-30(lever action hunting gun)
Mossberg 16 gauge(bolt action hunting shotgun)
Remington 597(.22lr semi)
Colt 6920(my baby)
North American Arms .22mag(cool pocket carry revolver)
Glock 23(multi-purpose pistol/EDC gun)

I think a good basic collection should at the least include:

12 ga shotgun - and I'm not sure that your only shotgun should be a tactical model I'm thinking more along the lines of a basic Mossber 500 or Rem 870 and then add a riot barrel.

.22 Rifle - you have that covered

Duty size handgun - you have that covered, this will be the true workhorse of your collection as it can serve so many different roles, CCW, Home Defense, Range use, SHTF ect.

Small easily concealable handgun - not sure I'd want this to be a .22 LR either.

Close to medium range rifle - your 6929 fits this category fine

For a basic jack of all trades collection you basically have everything covered, I'd personally pick up something along the lines of a J frame or a small auto for the small CCW part. But you said you wanted a LCP so that would probably be my next purchase.

Which brings us back to my first question. " Do you hunt"?

If so while you have a .30-30 and an older shotgun you could stand some improvement.

So to the first lost you could add any or all or maybe even all plus more:whistling::wow:

If you turkey hunt a dedicated 12 ga turkey gun.
If you deer hunt a Bolt gun in something like .270, .30-06 or 7mm Mag.
Probably going to need a good .50 cal muzzleloader as well
Might want to add a second deer rifle this time get something more specialized like a Browning BAR in .30-06 or .300 WSM for brush hunting
If you rabbit hunt you probably don't want to use your turkey gun, so that makes a spot for a dedicated rabbit shotgun 12 or 20 ga.
Ever hunt varmints/predators? You will need a super accurate small caliber rifle .223, .22-250, .243 ect.
Might want to add a heavy barrel rimfire if you are a squirrel hunter
If you like to hunt birds and upland game that will generally call for a O/U shotgun or a super nice semi-auto, although you can probably double up on bird and rabbit guns.
And finally you will probably want to add a heavy caliber handgun to carry in the woods. .44 mag or the like.

And finally, The SHTF question? Because if you do you might as well add some dedicated weapons for the purpose.

Unless you want your 6920 to pull double (or is it triple now:dunno: ) duty you will need a semi auto defensive rifle in .223, 7.62x38, .308 ect.

And again for a service grade handgun (unless you are planning on using the G23)

And most will add a rimfire pistol to gather small game.

So before its over you will probably have around 30+ firearms. But enjoy it, there is no cure and the disease gets worse the older you get.
