We just got new radios, the Motorola APX 6000 version 2 (without the telephone keypad under the screen), and while I'm generally so-so about the quality of the audio (everyone sounds like they've got a mouth full of cotton balls), the problem I'm having is the beep that signals people someone is keying up is unbelievably loud. Like, painfully loud.

I'm hoping someone in the CT Brain Trust has dealt with this radio system before and can help me either turn the beep down, or turn it off. The really sad part is, no matter how low you turn the voice volume, the beep is just as loud.

Here's hoping someone knows how to deal with this while I wait to contact Motorola directly.

Thanks, everyone!

Whoever programs your radio should be able to turn down or eliminate the tone. Be careful if you use a non departmental source to do this... some people get personally offended if you alter their carefully chosen settings...

Just to add - there is no user enabled function on the radio to do this. A computer, Motorola software, and a linking cable is needed to alter the key tone function.

Does it make the beep when you transmit as well? I hate it! Had that on my old radio, any reputable radio dealer (try to find the one who programs yoru radios for your pd) and have them take it off.

Your radio tech can add a MUTE function to the display, which will disable all tones. Once programmed you press the button directly below it to turn the tones on and off.

Sweet, turns out they did program a mute button into it, but we were told it only mutes the tones when you change channel, etc. Turns out you were right, it mutes that thing from all the tones. That ought to save me from some tinnitus. Awesome.

And no, ours doesn't beep when we transmit, only when someone else does.

My department is switching to the same radios at the end of the month.
We gave them a test run during our big town festival....didn't go very well...
I'm happy about being on the 800mhz system but pretty apprehensive about the equipment.

I like hearing the beep when you first key up. It lets me know if I'm transmitting. Without it, I don't know when to start talking. It also lets me know if I AD the mike button. I have a tendency to drop the F bomb, and don't need the watch LT on my backside for FCC violations.

The freq and the equipment are fine. It is the damn digital system that is the problem. Thank the FCC for a radio system that doesn't work well.
Over the last few years the phrase, "Repeat. You went digital" has become common.

Yeah, we have those radios. The radios aren't bad. We have the GPS in ours. If you keep the GPS on, it'll kill a radio in about 8 hours or so. If you disable the GPS, they'll last about 20-25 hours. Of course, the more you and others talk, the quicker it'll drain.

My issue is with the digital system. Some people you can barely hear and others are practically shouting because the volume changes all the time as it goes through the system. Drives me nuts.

It's programmable. We figured out how to make our tone go away.......Then figured out we were turning encryption off and broadcasting in the clear when we did that. Ooops.
