I am wanting one of these really bad. I am thinking of putting one on layaway. Anyone here have one? What do you think it? My HD shotgun at the moment is a Mossberg 88 Security model. Which I love by the way. I don’t need the 590. It just looks so cool and the price is very reasonable on these. So it’s purely a want, which is ok in my book.

At its core it’s just a Mossberg and I don’t mean that disparagingly, they’re great shotguns. If you want one, go for it.
I agree with Valmet. They’re just 590’s with the pretty furniture. My brother has one. It isn’t any different than the non-retrograde versions that I have. At one point, I was considering searching out the furniture, but I learned the dark color is more of a paint job than an actual stain. Luckily for me I had already found an older corn-cob set on ebay.
Get it. I ended up with a 500 and 590 Retrograde. I love how they look. No school, like old school.
If you can pick one up and feel the weight first, it's heavy. They are nice looking and well made
I have one. With the tube fully loaded it’s fairly heavy. I took the heat shield off to save weight.
If I were doing it all over, I would buy the 590S, so I could use mini shells in with 2 3/4” . And
for inside my home, an 18” barrel is just more handy.

I would buy the wood furniture and add it to your Mav 88.

If you need to put it on layaway, you absolutely don't need it!
Is your 88 working for you? Besides the wood stock, what else isn't ok? A $40 stock can get you into wood. That's way better than impulse buying a 590 retro.

I've got 2 590s. One is blued, the other is parkerized. Bought the blued in '99. Shot my Defensive Shotgun course with the blued one (300 rds full power double ought buck in 2 days, sore shoulder). It now resides in the trunk of my car, bungied to bottom side of the package tray. The other one lives by my bed with a tac light on it. I've shot other shotguns, but I own these.
What's not to love?!
I've had a couple of 590a1's that I wish I had kept. No way to put wood on my current sweetheart.
