Is this rifle a decent caliber for whitetail in Texas? Hogs? Possible trade, the gentleman says its worth is around $550 and it's brand new.
The 30-30 is a classic whitetail deer caliber. Used within its limitations, (150 yards or less), it is as lethal on whitetail or hogs as anything else. For nearly all of my hunting in KY, it is perfect. Of course everything is bigger in Texas, so your more wide open spaces might call for something with more range. You know your terrain and hunting situations better than anyone, but if you keep your shots within 150 yards or less you will do fine.

One note of caution, $550 sounds likely too high a price for that rifle unless it has a high dollar scope that is driving the price up. They dont make the 30AW anymore- it is an older model but i know of no special collector value associated with it. To find out what year it was made take the first 2 digits of the serial number and subtract from 100. If the first 2 digits are 12, then it was made in 1988 for example. In my neck of the woods, that rifle (without scope) would be selling for $350 tops, and likely less. Of course if it has a $200+ dollar scope then it may be right in line on the price.

Just my $0.02.....good luck!! :wavey:

Great gun for what you're wanting to do, as long as you keep your range to 150 yards. What scope is on it? Seems pretty pricey, especially for a used setup.

The marlin 30aw is a cheap version of the 336 made for Walmart from 1984-1988.

Unless it has a leopold vx3 or some other high dollar scope on it there is no way it is worth $500.

And berto, the three that actually sold on gunbroker in the last 90 days went for $220-$250.

If you know how to search for guns that have actually sold, not just look at what people are listing guns for, gunbroker can give you a very good idea of a guns value. Regional prices can vary greatly on guns, but a national auction gives you the true value people are.willing to pay. BUT, You need to search for guns that have actually sold.

OP,

The .30-30 OS great for deer and hogs out to 200 yards or so.

and if a gun has been sold at a retail store it is now used, whether the purchaser shot it or not. It can be like new in box LNIB, but it still is a used gun.

My 336 was used, but pristine, for 150 bucks, which was admittedly a steal. That said, 550 is way out of line. Maybe 350 used with scope.

If you run Hornady Leverevolution ammo in it you should be good to go out to 250 yards on deer.

What they've said. I had a 30A with a 4X Weaver on it, the gun was 25-30 years old and picked it up (used but clean and in good condition) for $220 and sold it for the same some years later.

Unless it was molested by General Patton or used by a famous criminal, etc....... no way it's worth $500 except literally new IN box maybe. It's an economy model gun.

That said, the .30-30 is perfect for any shooting inside 150-200 yards you'll do in Texas. The really long cross-valley stuff, no, but the average deer blind assassination or hog-whacking.... it's perfect.

I currently use a .44 Marlin for the same role but a .30-30 would work better.

Yup, the walmart winchester and remington are fine for hunting deer in the woods, the new hornady loads make it possible to use the same gun for longer range hunting over fields.

They are great little deer rifles.

The .30-30 works well on anything you'd care to hunt legally in Texas. I bought my latest used Marlin 336 that came with a Bushnell 3X9 and sling for $250 out the door from a pawn shop in Porter, TX four years ago right after deer season closed. Best time to buy a used Marlin is right after the deer season ends. I actually seek them out by the smell of recent shooting. I figure a fellow had to come up with some rent money or truck note and used the gun for the season and unloaded it.

I have a 30AW that I paid $200 for a few months back, had a decent simmons scope and see through rings on it. They are not on it anymore, I like open sights on a 30/30. I need to find the place to sell old 30/30's for $500 bucks, cause I have a few I need to unload.
