Can anyone ( That actually knows what their talking about ), please tell me why Glock has so many different magazine follower's.

Looking through my collection of .40SW magazines I can see 3 or more different follower numbers.

Each next follower "evolved" as a result of complaints or suggestions or recommendations from real users. So I'll be generous and say that each next follower is an even more perfect version of the last.

I like that. ;) Made me chuckle.

I remember asking the very same question in my first Glock armorer class. I was told that they were constantly trying to make sure their guns offered good functioning in the hands of different LE shooter/customers, using a variety of old & new hollowpoint ammunition.

Something else I was told (and which has been repeated many, many times on GT) is that just because a "new" follower design is released, that doesn't mean that an earlier follower must necessarily be replaced with the new one. As long as there's no problem with normal functioning with an earlier one, there's no reason to "fix it". Also, not all "new" followers are intended to be used in all earlier designed magazine bodies. Glock, or a Glock armorer, can answer questions of this sort easily enough (meaning follower/mag body compatibility).

Exactly what I was assuming.

All the various 40SW followers I own work fine. My only issue at the moment is finding the best one ( or # ) to run certain .357 Sig ammo with and I've been following one particular thread on this issue here in GT.

Thanks you guys!

how do you know which one to order to rebuild your mags.I have a second or third generation 13 round g23 pre-ban and dont know which updated follower is proper
SP 01028-5 Magazine follower .40 original style marked .40 & 5 - fits only mags factory supplied w/"5" or earlier followers

SP 01028-9 Magazine follower .40 cap-style - marked .40 & 9 - fits mags factory supplied w/"6", "7", "8" or "9" followers

There's another follower for the 10-rd G22/35 & a 10-rd G23 marked .40/10 & 1, but you said yours holds 13 rounds.

You probably already know the proper followers to use in .357 mags ...

SP 01593-2 Magazine follower .357 9-rd, 11-rd, 13-rd & 15-rd mags only - current follower is marked .357 & 2

SP 01009 Magazine follower .357 10-rd G31 & G32 mags only - marked .357/10 & 1

I prefer not to experiment using caliber-specific followers in a manner other than what Glock has indicated is appropriate for use, especially in a gun which is dedicated to defensive use.

I remember when I once asked a Glock rep about using mags/followers other than those stated as being appropriate for use in the .357 Glocks. He basically asked me why I'd want to risk using some combination of parts other than what Glock had determined would work as intended in the gun ... :whistling:

Glock obviously makes mags & followers for use in their .357 models. ;)

I have about 20 something Glock 9mm mags that I sent to Glock, for updating. Some were the old NFML and some FML. I called Glock about proper base plates, springs and followers, for them and the tech told me to just send them to his attention. I got them all back in about 10 days. This was about 3 years ago and I don't know if they would still do that. A phone call will determine that.

The mag followers in my pre-ban 13 round mags just are stamped 1028 and have .40 stamped on the feed ramp towards the front of the follower,so i think it can be one of two different types i see listed available
Yours is a #1 follower. Because it was the first .40 follower, it just has the part number instead of "#1". If your standard capacity magazine tube originally came with followers #1(1028) through #5, you must use one of those followers in that magazine tube. If your .40 magazine tube originally came with followers #6 through #9, you must use one of those followers in that magazine tube.

glockparts.com has .40 #5 and #9 followers. Though I don't think I've heard of a follower wearing out to the point that it needs to be replaced.

The followers have nothing to do with whether the ammunition is new or old design hollowpoint. All they do is push the rounds up to the mag feed lips. The new followers match the new magazines that they were made for which may or may not have anything to do with hollowpoint design.

I like that answer the best, so far.

I'm gonna stay in the fog as to know, specifically, which follower and/or spring that I should use with any particular mag tube, in my hand at the time. I don't really think that I'm gonna wear out any followers or mag springs, at my present rate of consumption.:snoopy:
