Does anyone have experience with Mag-na-Ports Combat Mini? This is a custom job they do on Smith and Wesson N Frames. They work the action over, nip the barrel down to 3”, new front sight, port the barrel, and covert the grip to a round butt K Frame (among other things). I have a 629 with 4” barrel, I am considering have this done to.

Thanks!

It will make it more concealable for hikes in the mountains. I usually take my chopped Glock 20 with hard cast Underwood ammo. But I’d like the option of my 629. I love the feel of a round but K frame grip.

Reminds me of the Trail Boss .44 mag revolvers Smith would turn out every so often.

For something shot little but carried a lot it would be fine. Or even if you shot .44 specials for plinking and magnums for defense it would be fine.

Can a new one be purchased to those specs?

I have a ported 8" Dan Wesson .44 mag. While it is the best .44 mag I've ever shot (comparing all brands/models), it is plenty ear ringing loud. And when shooting lead the porting gets lead build-up and needs to be cleaned before shooting jacketed, or else blow up gun danger. Very difficult to clean.

I have a 4" non-ported barrel for the same gun, that is much easier to live with :)

I had a 4" S&W Model 29 Mag na Ported back in the 80's. It did nothing for muzzle rise, and just made for an impressive, fiery, "V" when fired in low light. Lots of fouling at the front sight too. I never noticed that it made things louder though.

A couple of years back, I picked up a 3" S&W 696 that was a Lou Horton gun, that came with factory Mag na Porting.

As far as the porting goes, nothing has changed in 30 years, and the fouling is even more annoying with the SS gun.

This is what things look like after 50 rounds of 44SPL LSWC's. In reality, its only about 10 rounds, as you have to keep wiping the sight off every other cylinder or so.

If you look close, theres an orange insert in that front blade. The powder fouling is bad enough, the lead is a ***** to get off, as it fuses to everything.

Now, if you use plated bullets, things are a lot better, at least as far as the lead fouling goes.

50 rounds of plated lead bullets looks like this....

Either way, it doenst take long to lose that front sight to the fouling, so if youre shooting a lot in practice, bring a rag, or lead wipe.

I got this from S&W as a production model. I've had Magna Porting and Pro Porting done on rifles and shotguns, but not on a pistol. The current production 669 is a five shot 44 on a K frame.
