Due to a fortunate turn of events I will be ordering a Liberty Franklin 25 Gun safe today. I trust this is a decent brand from what I have read here. I am ordering in marble white with smoke hardware and a key lock rather than a combo lock. Is this a good idea or is the electronic lock a better idea?

Edit: Safe was upgraded to the Lincoln 25.

After you move it a few times you will really reconsider your decision to get white. If it is available in the textured gray or black finish I would get that. My nice pretty green 1100 lb. Washington 40 shows considerable wear from being moved several times. The electronic lock wasn't available when I got mine a long time ago.

I agree about the color but the walls are going to be painted to match it so its not such an "eye sore" as my wife put it. It is a compromise on my part to get this particular safe. She even agreed to go up two sizes from what I planned to get so we could get it in the marble white. Bigger safe for me, pleasing color for her. You know I argued against that, right?

I think that was a great compromise and smart to go bigger than you think you need. You'll end up needing more room and will save youreself some $ by planning ahead. Liberty is a great manufacturer. We are a dealer and I have been very impressed.

There was a locksmith on GT a lotta years. Can't remember his name, not sure if he's still around.

Anyway, he used to say go with the sargent and greenleaf combination lock. The typical version has a keylock dial, but he said to always turn that combination too. He said those locks last forever and work good.

He did not have anything good to say about any electronic locks, even on large high end safes. Seemed to be saying most of his calls were for fixing or replacing broken electronic locks on safes.

Now there you have it, 3rd hand, over the internet :)

I have a liberty with the S&G spin combo and keylocking dial, like that GT guy suggests. Have had mine for over 10 years, no problems at all with it.

Good to hear. I got the standard lock with dial key. I got it ordered and paid for. Install is Monday the 22nd. Pics to come! I am totally stoked. I have long guns in in all the corners of my bedroom that need a good dry home. I splurged for the dehumidifier and pistol hangers too.

I've had a Liberty safe for going on about 15 years now. Spin dial combo lock with the keyed lock that keeps it from turning if I wish. Not that I ever do. My only regret is not getting a bigger safe.

The original safe I picked was a 15 gun. Then the wife saw what I was doing and said, that us ugly! I said, its not supposed to be pretty. She said, does it come in any other color? I said, sure it does if you want to pay, she said what colors I showed her and she liked the white. I said, well, that's going to cost. lol

2 sizes up and I got my Franklin series 25 gun. Thank God they don't offer the white in the smaller safes. lol

I have a Revere 23 series safe from Liberty, with the S and G combination lock. It's bolted to the floor in my bedroom walk-in closet. Close the closet door and you'd never know it's there.

You'll never have a safe that's big enough. Forget about how many guns the manufacturer says the safe will hold, because it's only going to hold about half that amount in reality.

Buy the biggest safe you can afford.
Trust me, you'll never have enough room. You have a lot of non-firearm stuff that will also need to go in your safe.

BOLT it to the floor. My installer told me horror stories of safes that were not bolted down being stolen. One story of a safe that tipped over on a small child.

Good luck with your new safe.
You picked a good brand.

My only regret is not getting a bigger safe.

Famous last words

First there was one safe, then two.....
My firearms collection had to outstrip the number of corners in my house before I bought my first safe.

It was the old 'rather buy another gun' syndrome. Glad I got over that! Any safe is better than none at all.

I have a Mesa in 12 gauge. Got a good deal on it and I'm reasonalbly happy...

Wish I could have gotten it in 10 gauge but it would have been cost prohibitive.

They say you ain't gettin into a 10 gauge period...

They are surprisingly easy to move. Me and the wife just moved my 1100 lb'er thru the house rolling it on a half a dozen 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe- most of that was over carpet with at least 3 turns. It was scary easy. Bolt it down!

I have a Colonial in burgundy with the standard lock & key -- as it happens, the store I went to had it as a floor model ready for shipping, and I liked the looks, feel, and size.

I got it mainly as a deterrent for smash-and-grab theft of some firearms and papers -- also for moderate fire protection.
