Went and saw that new movie end of watch today. Got me thinking what do the lapd carry in the more rough neiborhoods like south central exc.. In the movie it was a g 17. I read where there are meny choices in 9mm 40 and 45. But is there one gun/caliber Thats preferred by the departments that get the most action?? Thanks

For the longest time the 92 was it, with the S&W 5906 as an alternate, and the 4506.

Some years back the Glock was authorized, and from all i've heard it tends to be the favored piece by those who have a clue.

They'll still issue you a 92FS if you don't want anything else, and they're decent guns as a holster piece (having carried the M9 and owning a 92FS) but the option to buy Glocks in 9mm .40 and I think .45 keeps everyone else mostly happy from what I've heard.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Glock 9mm was the most popular out of all of them, it's easy to shoot.

From what I know, the standard issue is Glock (most I saw were 22, rarely see 17) and Beretta 92. But they are very open on request, as long as you can qualify with it. There are two LAPD I know that always hang out at my local burger join, they were carrying 1911s.

Los Angeles PD standard issue sidearm
1970-1988 = S&W Model 14 (.38Special)
1988-2003 = Beretta Model 92FS (9x19mm)
2003-2011 = Glock 22 (.40S&W)
2011-current = Glock 17 (9x19mm)

In addition, LEOs assigned to special units (SIS, SWAT, etc) are authorized to carry and issued 1911s.
Currently, it's the Kimber Custom TLE II (.45ACP).

In addition, LAPD has a list of authorized sidearms that can be carried on duty/off duty.

I think it makes a big statement. When departments like lapd and nyc carry 9mm

I bet a bad guy wouldn't be able to tell much difference between a G17 and G22 when each are loaded with good duty ammo. a .40 might be slightly better at crushing or shattering bone because of the heavier bullet but 9mm doesn't totally suck in this area either. I remember a poster here a while back who had an accident involving his friend NDing a Win. Ranger-T 127 +p+ out of a G19 into his arm and it pretty badly screwed up the bones in there. The X-ray showed a shattered bone with fragments everywhere and it took a lot of screws and metal to get his arm working again.

Yeah pretty messed up at contact range... :whistling:

Ok, what statement? Unless you're intimately involved in the process of selection, you're just assuming things.
Just like, "Ooh, the Marines selected the Colt 1911 Rail Gun. That says a lot!". What?:dunno:

yes it does !! it means a single action 45acp is a more effective as a back up.to your rifle going in to offensive situations. and the 9mm glock is more effective as a primary due to recoil, rate of fire for street cops, where they dono what they might encounter on in any given day. iam not just assuming, i know ladp and nyc issue 9mm, and i know if it wasnt effective for there common encounters,(witch mimmic my own) than i know they wouldn't issue it. by knowing these things, makes it a big statement towards 9mm for ccw :tongueout::tongueout::tongueout:

I worked LAPD for just over 30 years. 1970 to 1988 the issued handgun, that I was issued was the S&W Model 15, not 14. The Combat Masterpiece. An outstanding revolver in 38 Special.

I retired in 2005 and remember the department changed the issued handgun from the Beretta 92 9MM to the Glock 22 40 cal in mid 2004 . then around 2011 they went back to the 9MM with the Glock 17 because many smaller officers and those unfamiliar with shooting were having trouble with the recoil of the 40. Today the issued handgun remains the Glock 17 but after you are off probation you can purchase a Glock 22 or Glock 21 for uniform work.

Special units could use a 1911 or a 4506 since about 1985 or 1990. SWAT have been using the 45ACP 1911 since I came on in 1974!

Lol. Since the Glock is the one issued to rooks, anyone carrying something else is the one with a clue.

Glocks are the ultimate in "one size fits some" with those stupid finger bumpers on them.

For the authority on all things LAPD, one only has to watch TNT's "Southland". :embarassed:
I remember when the show started, the rookie Ben Sherman was carrying a Beretta 92. But somewhere in the next few seasons, he switched to a Glock - not sure of the caliber.

If I recall correctly, the Kimber was dumped due to quality contol issues. Coulda been an internet rumor. Does anyone know if this is true?

Very interesting how all of the upper echelon officers choose to run 1911's. Military and police. That indeed speaks volumes of how great the 1911 design is.
