this is my first time using a molded kydex holster. this was a brand new G19 out of the box and the holster right out of the package. i bought the $40 owb holser from glockstore.com. gun fits a little snug, holds secure against the body and actually comfortable to wear. I've only secured/withdrew the gun three times in the house and this happened!! I expect some gun wear after a while but WTF? looked like it scratched it down to the metal. I looked inside, don't see or feel a burr. should i complain and send it back? is this common with plastic holsters?
thanks

Yes, not usually that fast though, I've seen slight wear after a few dozen times in and out of the holster on several occasions. I only use lined kydex for that reason.

I use Safariland, but there should be others if you do a Google search. Good quality fitted leather or kydex will do less damage to the finish than the cheaper made items. I've read some of the custom made stuff is better and less expensive, maybe some others will chime in.

Certain kydex holsters will and certain wont, depends on where the person making the holster uses as the tighter points for retention. The kydex holsters I use now are not lined and do not scratch the slide, they are made with a little slide clearance to allow for cerakote etc. I have had a few that did scratch the slide in the past, so I only stick with my (3) go to brands now who are all individuals / small custom holster business's

lined kydex, dammit! I never knew. any suggestions on holsters that are lined?
Garrett industries are the only kydex holsters I use. Very nice holsters, and not much more than some of the generic kydex holsters out there. Some have expressed concern for the material separating from the kydex over time, and this just hasn't happened in my case, granted my oldest one is only 2 years of age, but it's showing no signs of any wear out of the ordinary.

In your case OP, I'd be willing to bet there was a small rock, or something that got inside the holster and just scratched the heck out of your pistol. I don't foresee kydex alone causing that damage.

I'd like to at least break it in before getting the first scratch! I just wasn't sure if that's normal with the plastic. I get that worn out /used look on the leather holsters but with months/years of use. on the other hand the desantis iwb leather holster works like a charm

My Comptac and Sidearmor holsters have never damaged my Glock's finish. I've even aggressively rubbed my 27 with a Brillo pad and steel wool with no ill effects. It seems odd that some pistols seem so easily damaged. I'm sure they've changed the finish several times over the years.

I'm sorry about your pistol.

It's life , you should see my Gen 4 26. It's got marks all over the slide from the holster and it's just a few months old.

My G-21 has most of the finish gone off of it from daily carry for almost 16 yrs, All Pistol if you use them will get marks and holster wear it's just part of it, and if you train enough with your carry gun it will get beat up. The only way around this is buy it and put in the safe and never use it

My experience with Kydex and Kydex-type rigid holsters is that clean plastic rarely causes any short-term damage to the finish itself; it's the grit or dirt/sand/metal shavings, etc., that very easily get embedded in the Kydex that does the serious damage. Most plastic holsters will leave a streak of plastic on parts of the pistol, but the plastic itself just isn't hard enough to scratch through the finish in just a few draws without "help" in the form of something on the pistol or in the holster. Sometimes folks have thought a pistol was scratched, only to clean it up with solvent and find that the metal streak they saw was actually a streak of soft aluminum on the outside of the pistol's finish, and it went away when the pistol was cleaned.

Lined holsters will help prevent or spread-out the extreme pressure-points of more rigid holster designs, reducing wear, but they will NOT prevent the same type of damage if grit/dirt/metal shavings find their way into the holster lining. And once the lining of a lined holster is contaminated, it's very difficult to find and clean the debris out to stop future damage, unlike plain Kydex/plastic.

When I shoot outdoor matches in windy North Dakota, my holsters rapidly get coated with dirt/grit, inside and out. It can be very hard on a pistol's finish. I always tell folks if they want to keep a pistol looking pristine, then they shouldn't even BUY a holster for it, let alone carry it or draw it from a holster. Or buy two pistols of the same model; one to use, and one to gently wipe down and display on the padded shelf in the safe.

I remember when I found my first holster mark on my beloved Colt Trooper Mark III, 6in 357mag. It was my woods carry gun in AK in 1984-ish.

I was not happy. It was caused by a stone in the leather holster.

Took me all of a minute to get over it. Still the prettiest gun I had at the time and it shot perfectly.

Stuff happens.

I have used a BladeTech for my SA TRP Operator for 8 years and taken many firearms classes and have no scratches like that. Scratches are more painful than holster wear, I wouldn't worry about it. Look at it this way... If it really bothers you, now you have a good excuse to get your gun Cerakoted.

Regards,

Rick

I have an older bladetech revolution holster which has been used with an older G19 in a CFS advanced class. on the gen 3 glock I had at the time , no holster caused wear marks were acquired. on my Gen4, it marked the gun up the first time I put it in. I would have to say the finish is more the issue ,than the holster is. these newer glocks show wear a lot quicker than the older ones. clean kydex hasn't been a large issue before. lined holsters can pick up dirt easier and start wearing on the finish pretty quick. I don't mind a little wear on the gun. adds character to them, but there is a difference with the new finish. it is what it is. I am going to use the hell out of the gen 4 and safe queen my gen 3. it already has more wear on the finish than my Teflon looking gen 3 and I haven't even had a chance to fire it yet. My gen4 G17 that I use when I shoot uspsa,is the same way. gen3 G22 police trade in, isn't wore at all wheras the gen4, in the same holster is. If finish bothered me much, I would be more mad at Glock than the holster manufacture.
