Cabelas has the Remington 1911 R1 on sale for $549.97 and a $75 rebate, which lowers the cost to $474.97.

I've been looking at 1911's for about a year, and don't want to spend a more than $600, but I don't want to a piece of junk either.

Also depends on how many MIM parts you'll need to replace. These days you're seeing different kinds of MIM too.

Some 1911-makers use 'Sino-MIM' parts, which are sourced from China :puking:while others use 'Indo-MIM' parts, which are made in India.

Me, I prefer the internals of a serious 1911 to be all-American tool steel.

But I guess if it's just a range toy, the MIM-content doesn't matter.

Sent my Range Officer off to a well-known and respected gunsmith who builds precision pistols, a few months ago, and asked him if it would be better to put in my EGW parts for his trigger job. He said leave in the Springfield parts. Copy and paste from his email, concerning MIM:
" I strongly disagree with whoever told you that recent Springfield hammers and sears are not long lasting and reliable. I did about 106 of them in the last two years and they all work great. True, these are MIM parts. MIM parts got a bad reputation about 40 years ago when it was new technology. It is perfected now. Connecting rods in racing engines are made from MIM parts now! Do not send the EGW parts. If you don’t love the trigger job I will fit the EGW parts later for free."

Interesting. Thanks.

Grabagun has it for $479, minus the rebate and you'd be at $404 plus shipping and transfer. That's hard to beat for a decent 1911. Though I would probably just go for a Rock Island if it were me.

Yes but adding 25 for shipping and a minimum of $25 for an ffl and you are only a bit over $20 less than a gun you can actually handle and inspect prior to purchase which at least for me is worth the difference

Good friend has one...the trigger was very bad and the rear sight was set far left in the dovetail...the set screw was loctited in and is so small it is impossible to "break" it w/o heating the part...he had to send the slide to Rem for a fix...I would add a few bucks to the price and look for a nice Ruger as an entry level 45...but just one mans opinion

I think I'd rather have the Remington name on it that Rock Island, but not for any good reason. Either way, being that it's a 1911, parts are readily available. For $130 and a couple of minutes of your time, you can swap out the sear, disconnector and hammer for an EGW replacement and have an instant great trigger. Watch a video on youtube about beding your sear spring, or throw in a replacement for $25 and have a lighter trigger. Put in a $25 barrel bushing and improve accuracy, etc.

Remington's base model has a proprietary rear dovetail cut and who knows what kind of frame dimensions. At least I know the RIA is pretty much standard, and can take almost any replacement parts.
Actually, I take it back anyway... the SA Milspec Defender is the best deal right now.

I am from the, 'measure twice cut once' thinking with a senior perspective. So for 1911s I always go Colt. :cowboy:
