Is HST 10MM reliable?

I carry a stock G20 or 29 with. Underwood. I'd like to switch to the new 200 grain Federal HST 10MM. It's expensive. How many rounds minimum to know it runs reliably in my gun? Any known issues?

Should be fine as is, I ran a box when I had some it functioned fine.

I know Federal is 200 grain but at 1130 fps with 567 lbs of muzzle energy wouldn’t the 180 grain Sig Sauer V-Crown be the better hollow point? It has 1250 fps with 624 lbs of muzzle energy. 10mm was designed to push over 1200 fps with a 200 grain bullet Federal is holding back.

The HST is a better controlled expansion projectile than the V-crown, and is designed to work best at the 1000-1130 velocity window. Additionally, the heavier 200 grain projectile has greater mass and sectional density and while the 180 grain load gives you more foot pounds of energy on paper, keep in mind that a 55 grain 22-250 also has more theoretical foot pounds than a 45-70, but which would be more effective for a humane kill on Elk, Moose, and Bear?

But if the 200 grain HST isn't enough for you, there's always the Underwood 200 grain jhp which develops 1250 fps and produces 694 ft/lbs of energy and costs less than either the Sig V-Crown or the federal HST ammo at $26.99 dollars a box of 20. Underwood uses a different bullet in this ammo (Nosler) rather than the Gold dot or the XTP but for defense against feral predatory humanoid recidivists rather than big game I'm sure that it's more than sufficient, and Underwood seems to like the Nosler bullets.

The Underwood XTP ammo is out of stock from Midway and Underwood and the 200 grain Gold Dot is not even listed anymore in underwood's current catalog. I've used both the Underwood XTP's and Gold dot 180 and 200 grain loads in the past, and have ordered from both midway and directly from Underwood. You might want to call Underwood' customer service and ask bout the status of both the Gold Dot and the XTP 200 grain 10mm loads

Speed isn't everything. As a guy who has loaded 10mm for over 30 years and hunts with 10mm yearly, I can tell you that bullet performance is more relevant than speed.
If Federal says their 200 gr bullet works best at 1130 FPS, you can pretty well bet that it does.

OTOH, before you spend too much time criticizing Federal for "holding back", have you considered leveling the playing field? Yes, Federal 200 gr HST runs 1130 FPS and delivers 567 FPE at the muzzle.
But the equivalent 200 grain load from SIG???
1050 FPS and 490 FPE at the muzzle.

Who's holding back???

I know my son has some HST for his 1911 style 10mm and I think it has run fine in it. Not sure how many HST he's put through it, though. Maybe just a mag or two to check, but no problems.

Most of my family uses HST in our 9mm pistols and none have had any problems with it.

I like the HST in any caliber, they just work as designed. If your pistol is reliable, i am fine running a full mag from each carry mag, as fast as you can run it both hands, strong & weak.

If this is CCing for protection against human threats - does anyone really think it would matter which 10MM brand name round you use?

It is like in the tactical shotgun forum people debating which buckshot load is best for HD.

You do your part and put a direct hit on your target the result will be good, you miss the target and it doesn't matter.

I didn't have any issues with HST in my Gen 4 20 or 29 BUT I've moved to Critical Duty for my 10mm SD loads for 2 legged creatures. This is from a guy who EDC HST 9, 40, and 45 with confidence. Unfortunately, Critical Duty in 10mm isn't cheap either.

Nothing scientific but messing around at the range of recovered bullets looked great.

Just curious what failure with cast? I tried lubed cast, so-so accuracy. Once i went to coated, way better in my glock.

I often load HST in my 9mm carry gun, and I've fired a few 10mm HSTs in my Model 20.

I don't attempt to fire a statistically significant # of top tier ammo through my guns in order to verify reliability. It would work, but it would cost a small fortune. And even after doing that you could still conceivably run into An out of spec defective round when purchasing new boxes.

Assuming the gun has a history of being reliable with range ammo, my reloads, and a bit of the top tier ammo in question- For my money a better approach is to run the rounds I carry in the gun and the spare magazines through a case cage before loading. Just like I would before shooting reloads at a USPSA match. You can pick up a case gauge for less than the price of a box of premium ammo. Or, if you don't have a case gauge you can go the budget route- disassemble your pistol, Grab the barrel on its own and use the chamber of the actual firearm as a case gauge- If the round easily drops in the chamber, spins easily while it's in there, and easily drops out, I call it good to go...when I don't have a case gauge.

Yes, I know there's other variables, magazine feeding, bullet design on the feed ramp, yada, yada, But I am simply not Shooting up a bunch of HST, Speer gold dot, or hornady FTX, etc, Every time I swap ammo.

I didn't know factory 10mm HST was a thing, learned something here.
