How Often Do You Forget Your Gun At Home

I read a post in another discussion in which the poster said that he keeps a spare handgun in his car in case he forgets his gun at home.

I thought it was kind of odd that somebody apparently forgets their gun at home often enough that they plan for it with a spare gun in their car.

Hence, this post.

Due to medical, surgeries, weeks in hospital, car in long term parking, few good meds. 2014 new knee then 2018 infection in fake knee… I don’t carry near as much. I still have a knife. I do know where to cut.
I don’t forget it. But I decide that I am going onto Federal institutions property, offices, places i know I am not legal to carry. I decide to le@ve it at home rather then leave it in car. Sometimes leaving it in car is still illegal unless I park a Mile away.
Traveling I check states. I try to stay legal.

I was going to write "Never"... but, then I remembered that I did completely forget my gun ONE time! I was super busy and running late... and I was several blocks from home until I realized that something just didn't seem right. Then I felt for my gun and figured out what it was. I had to go on without it because there wasn't any spare time remaining to go back home to get it.

Having LEOSA behind you is really helpful. For the rest of us, we have to deal with the patchwork of laws. Sorry, honey no dream vacation to Hawaii or we can't take the kids to church because I can't carry (depending on the state) is very problematic. Or picking and dropping the kids off from school. Then going back for another school function at an other time. Laws very across the country. This is just commentary on a small selection of off limits situations normal people find themselves in all the time.

I've forgotten my phone, but NOT my gun, and I'm old!

I did it one time in the last 12 years. I had been dryfiring so had my carry gun out if the holster in favor of my dryfire gun. Put the dryfire gun away but got distracted and left the carry gun in the safe. Went to the corner store a while later and while standing in line realized the holster was empty. Body can't feel the difference between an empty or occupied kydex mold.

I had an NRA instructor tell me to always leave a gun in my car.
I thought that was bad, irresponsible advice.
Yes, bad advice. That is how most guns are stolen. Right out of vehicles.

Bumper stickers that advertise gun anything, are also signs for vehicles that thieves will target first.

I hate to admit it, but I have once or twice.
A couple weeks ago I went out for my nightly (at that time) neighborhood walk, leaving my G-27 back in the house and only my pocket knife, and walking stick to protect me.
Whew, I made it successfully around the subdivision with no issues, but you never know do you?
The other time I had to break out the G-22 “Trunk Gun”.

I don't usually carry a gun while in my house, unless I am expecting a visitor who is not well known to me, such as a tradesman, or on rare occasion, a person coming to buy something from me. And on a few occasions I have been lounging around the house, unarmed, and not planning on leaving, when something comes up and I need to run out on an errand, such as picking up something my wife needs for the preparation of dinner that night, and I forget to put a gun in my pocket. But I would never routinely leave a gun in any of my vehicles as the risk of theft is too great.

FWIW, since I added a Ruger LCP2, in 22LR, to my safe, I sometimes put this little gun in its Desantis pocket holster, right into my right front pants pocket even if I have no firm plans to leave the house. It is so small, and loaded with 10 rounds of CCI Stingers, that it is not a bother to have in the pocket even of lightweight shorts. Yes, I know 22LR is not ideal, but I feel comfortable having that gun with me as a "just in case".

No one wants to hear this but I'm pretty regular. Like you can set a clock by me.

That's relevant because the last 7 years of my work life I worked nights as a security guard.

Every place I worked I found some obscure, out of the way bathroom that I could lock behind me.

I would lock the bathroom door behind me and put my gun right in front of the door so I couldn't leave the room without stepping over my gun.

Worked every time.

Since MN's self defense laws changed, I carry far, far less than I'd like. Even shoooting someone invading your home is a dicey thing here these days. You basically need to run somewhere and corner yourself before you can even pulll a gun on an already armed persion attacking you, even at home.
