I'm trying to figure out the best method to organize and store my gun cleaning supplies and tools in a way that keeps everything together for easy access and portability. My arsenal includes handguns, rifles and shotguns, so I have a variety of jags, brushes, bore snakes, cleaning products, patches, cloths, rods, etc. I have small bottles, tall bottles, aerosol cans.

Right now I have a tool box dedicated to gunsmith tools. My set is small, but the tools are very good quality. Other than working on Glocks and Marlin rifles, my gunsmith knowledge is pretty limited. This stuff probably will stay organized as is.

My gun cleaning stuff is all in one large fishing tackle box with multiple fold-out trays designed to hold baits; the bottom of the box is for large items like reels, knives, tools, etc. Even though its a big size, this arrangement just isn't working: the trays' divided spaces are too small to be useful and the bottom storage area is too small and too shallow. There has to be a better way to organize and store this gear. Since I don't have a work bench, portability is essential?

How do you keep your gun cleaning kit? What kind of box or tote do you use and how is it organized? Pictures would be extremely helpful.

A small plastic tool box is handy. Even a plastic basket works anything that helps you grab everything you need with one hand.
Since I'm in the southwest where critters abound, anything kept in my garage has to have a lid on it or my spouse freaks out when I bring it indoors.

I haven't thought to check Midway and other gun supply sellers to see if there is a Plano or other brand box designed specifically for gun cleaning stuff. I know this isn't a problem for MIT grads to solve, but there must be a perfect container out there for this purpose. And, a small box won't hold all of my gear.

Why not get a rubber tub from walmart or some place like that? They should have one big enough for your tool box and your cans/bottles of cleaning stuff. Just dump all your stuff into the tub and stand the rifle cleaning rod in a corner, if you have a one piece rifle rod. Another idea for the rod is to take a PVC tube, glue a cap on one end, a screw-on cap on the other, and slide your rod in there, so it can't be easily bent if it happens to fall over, or something falls on top of it.

I use an old tackle box just like you do, been working fine for many years. I have a really small box that I take to the range with me and equip it depending on what gun I am shooting that day.

Small bottle of CLP, boresnake, chamber brush, any applicable spare parts, sight adjusmtent tools etc...

I dont get out to the range near enough, nothing worse than getting out there and having a problem I cant fix on the range.

Geeeze, I must have a lot more 'stuff' than youse guys. Maybe I can get a photo up.

My long-gun cleaning rod is one piece and kinda expensive, so I will take TK-421's advice and make a PVC case to store it. Great idea.

Maybe I've got more than I really need, but its nice to have all size patches, pistol cleaning rods, a brass brush set, brass jag set, oils, oil and grease syringes, bore cleaner, Flitz polish, Renaissance wax, Mother's mag wheel cleaner for stainless cleaning/polishing, bore snakes, tweezers, bore lights, etc. Since I live in a condo, there isn't a good spot inside for these supplies, and I really want to keep it all together. Yea, I need a work bench.

I was guessing lots of guys were dealing with the same problem. Maybe not. I'll check out the box you recommend, Black&Tan. Throwing everything into a tote might work, too. Part of the problem is that I'm a little anal about keeping stuff organized.

I'm with you on being anal about being organized. Me personally? I'd get a workbench. However, it does take up space, and needs to be securely anchored down if you want to hang a reloading press on the edge of it, which involves drilling big holes, which you might not want to do. And in that case, I'd either get a big tote, or get that case that has the gun rack included, so you can use it to clean your rifle. For the big tote, I'd get boxes that fit inside the tote. The tote allowing you to grab one thing, and have everything you need. And the boxes inside insure that things stay neat and organized.

If I didn't have a work bench, I'd get a tote, and then buy boxes that fit inside it to help organize my stuff. If I didn't have a table to set a gun stand on, then I'd get the box with the built in gun rack.

I almost forgot about my gun vise, which lives on a shelf in the garage.

This conversation is starting to lead me in another direction...towards a work bench with drawer storage and rollers.

In the meantime, my quantity of stuff probably requires a tote or a chest of some sort that can be organized with plastic trays and boxes to separate items for easy access. That could actually turn out to be a pretty useful arrangement while remaining portable and critter proof. A clear plastic tote would be ideal.

Thanks for the tips. If anyone can recommend a 4'-6' long work bench on rollers that could be moved around within a garage space, I'd love to hear about it.

The nice thing about a big tote and storage boxes, is that if look around enough, you should be able to find something that holds a lot more than the gun rack box, for cheaper or around the same price, give or take a few bucks. Once I start accumulating stuff I'm going the route of the tote, until I can get a decent job and afford to move out. Then I'll get a two bedroom apartment and the second room will be half computer room and half gun room. That way I can have a nice work bench, and hopefully a reloading press, and have all my gun stuff well organized. I'd much rather have all of my stuff proudly displayed on my bench, instead of rattling around in a box. But, until then, a big tote will do just fine.

That is an interesting thread, some folks really do recommend small containers! Not much fitting into them. My gun room got pretty much filled with cleaning supplies over the years.

Actually I have Bisley steel cabinets with drawers to organize my gun accessories, reloading stuff, and cleaning supplies.
