Recently, I started handling my 2 full sized Glocks. The 17.3 and 22.3. I have a 19.3 and 23.3 - and over the last few years, I've given more attention to the 23. I hate finger grooves on Compact Glocks, so I had a very nice custom frame reduction on the 23. Removed the finger grooves, and undercut the trigger guard. It fits my hand so much better. I keep conversion barrels in the case, so I can go from 40 to 9mm, or to 357 Sig whenever I want. In fact, this 23 acts no differently than the 19 I have when I convert to 9mm.

Now there's this issue. When I started handling the full sized Glocks, i realized they feel so much better in the hand than any Compact or SubCompact. I started comparing the full to the compact, side by side, and in handling them. The 17 is really not much bigger than a 19 or 23. Little bit longer slide, little deeper grip. That's about it.

I want to ask: Who uses Glock 17s on a regular, normal basis? I'm hearing most Law Enforcement uses Compact. Seems all I hear about with Military lately is Compact. But the G17 is Glock's "flagship" pistol. Do any of you reading this carry a G17, or G22, or other full sized Glock?

Typically, a longer barrel can mean better accuracy, especially at a distance, right? Any bigtime G17 carriers here?

In 2003, when picking a duty Glock, I tried the G22 and G23. The finger grooves on the G23 hit me in the wrong place. The G22 felt OK, so I went with it. I still use it. For belt carry, duty or otherwise, I see no reason to not have the full size.

This is my Glock 17. It is the pistol that I carry more than 90% of the time, and is sorely missed when I am forced to carry one of my lesser pistols. For me, the so called “compact” Glock pistols aren’t compact enough to be noticeably more carry-friendly, yet they are just small enough to where I feel like I am holding a youth model of the real thing.

For me, the minor velocity increase, major handling improvement, and 2 round capacity advantage is worth the extra concealment effort. If I need a smaller gun, I’ve got a G43X for that. When I am able to carry a gun suitable for fighting with... my G17 is the one I choose, and I carry it exactly as you see it pictured here, spare magazine and all.

I’ll chime in on the tail end of your question: accuracy between compact/ full size.

assuming citizen defense, a shooter who is trained proficiently (not super operator or whatever) at 50 you should be accurate with either full size or compact, esp if using an upgraded sight that works well for you. Let’s assume an active shooter in a big open mall.
75m: either size gun is a dicey gamble but can be done but you should take cover or close the distance on the shooter then engage. And in a chaotic active shooter scene that probably could be done.

100m: don’t know why you’re shooting back- that would be a really bad day. Either close the gap or if you suddenly find yourself as Jack Bauer- let them come to you.

above is a more extreme situation but that’s how I look at the choice between the 2 sizes and factors. I don’t think anyone here will debate that it doesn’t matter 25m and in. And if one is LE and has that choice of compact vs full sized, I’ll take the lighter gun since you have access to a long gun if needed. That’s how I looked at it when I was over seas. And add to that our pistol mags had to be flush w/ the grip, not extend past

I carry my 17 daily. When I’m in the bush I carry the 20sf. Only rarely do I carry the 33. Being 6’5” probably helps, as does having schlepped around a full sized handgun for 23 years at work. Just sorta get used to it, I guess. No trouble at all, really.

Not an LEO, but I consider the compact Glocks as more or less a jack of all trades, but master of none. I keep a G17 for a holster/night stand gun, and a G26 12 + 1 round for CCW, plus a G17 mag reload. Works quite well for either IWB or pocket carry. I wouldn't even think about pocket carrying a compact model. But to each their own.

My favorite full size Glock is the 21 It is perfect for my hand. I love my 30 too but on my 30 and my 23 I have put two Talon grips on both pistols because with 2 layers of Talon grips it virtually eliminates the finger grooves by filling in the spaces with material. It’s as if there are no grooves with the T-grips.
I shoot all equally well mostly because I spend the time at the range to be proficient with all of them. I do shoot the 21 a tad better because it just fits my hands better.
In addition I have a H/K P30sk that has adjustable blackstraps that is a real shooter too. Don’t care for the long double action pull but the single action is crisp and breaks nicely.

I cant comment on the G17 because I don't own one.
My first Glock was a G19.3. I carried for a few years and still own it, but then I bought a G20 Gen4. I bought it purely out of curiosity of 10mm, and I liked it so much that I started carrying it, and now my G19 is my night stand gun.

Yes, the G20 is significantly longer, thicker, and heavier, but I do not find it at all inconvenient to carry every day.

What is your method for concealed carry for the G20 on EDC.

Right now a Sig P226 is my nightstand gun. My last range trip taught me after all these years that I just don't do as well with my 23 as I do with a 22 OR a 27. It must be the hump in the 23 and the way it hits my hand. I mostly carry my 27 but have carried the 22 with a TLR-1 just to see if I can do it. For me, where I wear my pistol, the 22 just slightly prints from the longer grip. For fall/winter i would have no problem changing to the 22 for EDC.

The big question is are you going to carry these guns. If not, this is a now issue. Just stay with the full sized guns

If you do carry, can you conceal the 17/22? The 19/23 is already a bit big for CCW.

Having said that, I know that there are people carrying 17 sized guns. It can ge done. But the main reason people go to smaller guns is easier concealment.

On the flip side have you handled the Gen 5 compacts yet? No finger grooves.

This topic was covered recently. See here:

If the three main sizes of Glocks (regular sized frames) the full size and sub compact feel the best to me, the compact is okay but I do slightly prefer the larger and smaller options.

As was mentioned or at least inferred above, a good holster and belt set set up can go a long way towards making a full size handgun at least bearable for EDC CCW. Strong side carry, IWB, AIWB. All have strengths and weaknesses in their practicality.... Ease of draw, concealability, weapon retention... The list goes on... But comfort is definitely in there somewhere towards the end... Full size CCW is Definitely doable.. With some caveats...

Remember, carrying everyday is a lifestyle choice... It affects what you wear( even more important with a full size gun) where you go, and how you act/ interact or don't act around others, whether you drink when all your buddies are grabbing a beer.... These and more become part of your mindset. Being alert to your surroundings because you very a firearm.

Nothing wrong with carrying the weapon you see most accurate and confident with.. whichever weapon or direction you decide to do.... Most important factor......

TRAIN CONSTANTLY AND CONSISTENTLY WITH THE WEAPON YOU CARRY... Matter of fact... That's how those who win gunfights stay alive... Godspeed!
