So....I really want a glock 40 for when I go camping, hunting, hiking etc because it will put down just about any threat one would find out in the woods (also because the glock 40 just looks freaking awesome).

Anyway, I can easily get a new gun but finding ammo in 10mm seems to be challenging. So is it possible to get similar stopping power as a 10mm with hot .40 s&w rounds going through a 6+ inch barrel.

If so, what type of ammo would you guys suggest I try.

Get the 10mm and forget the pathetic 40sw.

In my own arrogant opinion, I think it's always better to go with a bigger caliber rather than trying to hot rod a smaller caliber into something it was never intended to be.

Reload and you'll never have trouble finding 10mm.

I'm with you slowpoke1999. I've got this idea of my Glock 35 playing the role of a do all outdoors gun.

BTW, a Bianchi UM92 holster makes a good backpacking rig.

When you start getting into hot .40 S&W, keep in mind it is going to be almost as expensive or more even than 10mm. Buffalo Bore makes a 155 gr .40 S&W that goes 1300 fps. Anyone that tells you that won't kill something has never shot an animal, but it is over a dollar a round. BB 10mm is only about $4 more for a comparable 20 rd box and they usually stay in stock or catch their back stock up, quickly. Bad thing with 10mm is you're always stuck buying 10mm.

It's no harder finding woods carry 10mm than it is to find .40.

Figure you're gaining around 20 grains and 250 fps with the 10mm in a hardcast loading, though I don't know if that's going to really make much difference in the lower 48.

I do have a 10mm and love it as a woods gun with 180 grainers doing 1300fps. However I do believe a long barrel 40S&W will be fine, like the G35. Underwood sells the Penetrator ammo and other hot FMJ ammo that would be good for the woods.

thanks guys. i would really like the 10mm pistol...but even though ammo is available...it isn't as readily available like the 40sw

Double Tap makes a .40 load with a 200 grain bullet (WFN design) at 1000-1100 fps. I would think that could solve any problem you would encounter, short of a rogue elephant.

The few Cabela's I've been to lately all have 10mm ammo, $27/box for the new Sig 180gr, 1250fps. It's always available online for a little less (Sig and Remington). Nothing at any Walmart though.

If you use only factory ammo (and are looking for justification to buy another $600 gun) , the 10mm gets the nod.

If you are an experienced handloader, you can get probably get close enough for anything in the lower 48

The best of all worlds is a G20 with a throated .40 conversion barrel so you can load to 10mm OALs but with the case strength of the .40.

Actually, the best of all worlds involves a compensator and a G21, but you don't handload and didn't ask about that :p .

I've never had any trouble finding 10mm ammo.
