Glock 29 or Glock 30?

Hi, I am new to the forum and I had just purchased my first firearm a few months ago which is a Glock 23 Gen 3. I am loving it so far. For my next handgun, I was looking at the Glock 29 or the Glock 30. I will be using this for home defense. In your opinion, which one would you pick for home defense? The 29 or 30? Thanks.

I got the G29 gen4 handgun as my choice. Then later bought a G30 gen3 complete slide and G30 magazines. Then even later found a used G30 SF frame. Now I like to use G20 and G21 magazines with x-grip adapters for them.
Even later on I found a used G36 slide which looks and feels small compared to the other slides.
And reloading components for all these.
Good luck. Whatever you choose. I've never been disappointed.

For home defense, I don't see the point of getting a gun with a shorter barrel and grip and less ammo capacity than your G23. And if you'e wanting a little more power than a 40 caliber, a full size Glock 21 would loaded with 230 grain JHP Plus+P's would be better. Keep in mind the shorter barrelled guns develop less muzzle velocity if more power is what you're looking for. As far as the 10mm G29 for home defense it fires a higher pressure cartrdige and has more muzzle blast than the 45 and even more than the 40.

Also trigger reach can be a problem on G29's and G30's unless it's a gen 4 or a Gen 3 SF frame.

Consider the larger full size variants for home defense.
yeah…I have to agree w/ going w/ my brother if it’s a stay at home gun, the G20. If no intent to carry it regularly then make it a fighting gun: a G20 or G40. A G40 w/ some good sights? You won’t think twice about 75-100yds. I joke that it’s a substitute SBR.

The G30 or a variation of it gets my vote. As its one of the most accurate Glock models availible. And Ive personally found that to be true. Bullet selection makes all the deference as far as power goes. The 30 could also be used for home defense if needed. It's truly an amazingly versatile pistol. You might want a 10 MM down the road. If it indeed fits your hand. Its quite a chunky pistol. Ammos cheaper with 45acp by a long shot. Which equals more trigger time.

Have both. Both are solid. I’d go G30 for HD just because I like 45ACP. It will go through walls, but most real ammo will to some degree. YMMV

10mm is a hoot, but just seems a bit “blasty” for HD to me. Then again, shotguns are a tad noisy too, so maybe who cares?

for me personally, I wouldn't get a larger framed Glocks (20, 21, 29 or 30) SF or not, don't fit my hand as well as the Standard size frames like your 23 and when you add more powerful defensive ammo to the mix, it become more difficult to maintain a good grip. In addition, the expense of ammo, even cheap practice ammo are factors that you should take into account.

I do have a Gen 4-23 that I carried for several years, which I felt at the time was the perfect carry/home defense weapon available before I made the switch to the 43X MOS, carried IWB and backed up with two Glock 22 mags with +1 extensions carried in a Stick Holsters dual mag sleeve, off hand back pocket.

I don't care for weapon mounted lights, don't like the idea of having to pointing my weapon at what I want to illuminate. I have something similar to the Switch Back I've linked below, watch it and you'll get the idea.

my suggestion would be to get a 40 to 9mm conversion barrel for your 23, a Glock 19 & two Glock 17 mags (minimum), a maglula, a case of cheaper FMJ ammo and take a defensive handgun course.

in becoming proficient with your current handgun you'll know what works for you, what you don't like and what you'd like to change, once you get there, then consider a new handgun.

Big difference in the 29 and the 30 the 30 is the softer shooting 45 caliber and the 29 is the fast hard hitting 10mm. You could take midsize game at close range with the 29 if that is what you want, 10 mm ammo costs a little more. 10 mm ammo is a little harder on the gun too but it is a great round. I am a 45acp guy myself, but I like the 10mm it is a no nonsense round.

Agreed. I have both and shoot them back to back often. The G30 is a *****cat, the G29 is a blasty handful. Both are good but I vastly prefer the G30 and made it my EDC

Oh those two choices the 30 Gen 4 or 30 slim frame Gen 3. You said you’re new to guns the 29 might be too much recoil for you right now maybe not, and it’s very loud indoors. But for home defense 21 would be better if you’re not gonna carry it, and I think you would enjoy shooting it more.

Just answering the OP question. I would select the G30 because it is a bit softer shooting, less muzzle blast (hearing damage) and ammo is easier to find and less costly than 10mm. Both will do the job and if carrying is in the future, both have same dimensions and close in weight. Good luck
