Well, I picked up my G23 earlier today (yesterday now) and took it to the range and broke it in with about 300 rounds through it. Shes a keeper, even though she did bite the webbing of my hand a couple times... No biggie though, only lightly scratched me. Nothing that would prevent me from continuing in a firefight or cause hesitation should I need to quickly draw and shoot.
In my quest for comparative info between the XD service model and the G23, I found very little when it came to external dimensions. I could find gobs and gobs of info all over the net about the various features of each gun, but with a reasonably extensive knowledge of general firearms, it was not what I was looking for. It wasn't until I went to my local range and was able to directly compare their rental Glock 23 to a new on the shelf XD9 Service. I was surprised that the Glock's slide is almost identical in length and the only MAJOR difference in size is the length of the grip. The length of pull is very close also.
Well to make it easier for anyone that might be interested in comparative photos (found a few that were interested in this as well when I would create a requesting post) I decided to snap a couple photos of my HS2000 9mm Service and my new Glock 23 side by side. Hopefully this will be helpful to at least a few.
#1. "Identical Cousins"
#2. The shorter grip will definitely help make this thing a bit more concealable. I guess you could achieve the same thing with an XD by performing a simple "Grip Chop" or by purchasing something along the likes of a XD45 Compact.
#3. Very similar footprint all around again with the exception of the shorter grip on the G23.
#4. Looking down the barrels of two unloaded guns. Just another angle that shows the grip length differences. The beavertails on the frames were lined up for this shot.
Conclusion: I like the Glock23. I like it a lot. It is a lot lighter than the HS, and the shorter grip will allow it to disappear more easily in a good IWB holster like a Crossbreed, yet still offers great capacity for a .40 (13rnds) over something along the lines of a Sub-Compact.
The XD is a more comfortable gun to shoot all around and the extra heft provides softer shooting. The extra inch or so on the grip though is a bit harder to conceal than one might think. It still disappears in a Cross Breed, but at least on my body makes it a tad more difficult.
Overall, I like the added grip safety on the XD, and prefer it as a range toy. I like the weight and added concealability of the Glock 23 and will use it more as a CC gun and less as a range toy.
/Long winded and boring writeup.
