I know this is old news to most of you but im new to Glock so here goes...going to buy a 23 for carry. How simple is the 9mm conversion? Barrel and mags? Or is there more to it? Thanks

Extremely easy. You would just buy a 9mm conversion barrel made for the Glock 23. I wouldn't use the conversion for my CC and stake my life on it, but I would use it at the range.

Do you use the G23 mags for 9mm or do you have to use 9mm mags? Also, do you have to change the extractor or ejector for better reliability? I only ask 'cause I don't know, for sure, and my son has a G23.

Most of us get near perfect reliability with only a barrel and magazine change. In fact, some people run 40 extractors on 9mm to cure some extraction nuisances.

.40 Glocks are very versatile. They can be converted to shoot 9mm and 357Sig.

For 9mm, you need a barrel and 9mm magazines
For 357Sig, you just need a barrel (40 mags work fine for 357Sig - which is basically an necked down 40)

And no, you can't convert your 9mm Glock to 40 as easily. The 9mm breechface is too small for a 40.

Please explain how a .40 extractor works on a 9mm
The differences are minuscule. The 40 extractor is an unofficial cure for erratic ejection with 9mm Glocks when other cures failed. By all means, if a 9mm extractor is available and works use it.

Not all hope is lost. There are several complete Glock 23 and 27 uppers on EBay for less than $300.

I've owned a number of conversion barrels for Glocks. Currently have four to convert the 35,22,23,27 40/9. All have been Glock reliable after adjusting OAL on some bullet profiles. The Lone Wolf conversion barrels typically have a short leade, which may require some OAL adjustment if shooting reloads. When I first used the conversions, I changed the extractor, spring loaded bearing, and ejector. Soon found out my guns ran reliably with only a barrel and mag change. I currently run them in IDPA/USPSA in both .40 and 9mm, depending on the division I'm shooting.

I found the LWD barrel to have problems with commercial reloads.

Factory new UMC, WWB, etc seemed to run fine.

The factory armorer instructors will tell you to use the 9mm firing pin when converting .40 -> 9mm, because of the concern for pierced primers; although I've never heard of anyone having this issue.

You can't simply use the OEM 9mm barrel in a .40 because the barrel OD of the 9mm is smaller; but you can use the .357 SIG OEM barrel in a .40 [and vice versa] as the barrel OD's are the same.

In a way that is why I prefer a Glock 23 converted to 9mm vs a Glock 19. The extra thickness in the barrel wall giving a bit of extra weight to the gun.

The issue with LW barrels are the tight chambers and tight throats. The majority of factory ammo works just fine. I just have to seat bullets a little deeper for them to work.

You can buy a lone wolf 9mm conversion barrel I would be just as comfortable carrying it as my 40 barrel. You practically have a g23 and a g19
