I know that the .40 S&W round is high pressure to begin with but is there a +P round? I'm looking for something to feed my G23 EDC. I have used Gold Dots, HST, Cor- Bon and even Norma Diamond. I want the very best performance I can get out of my weapon. I have now used 165 gr. Federal HST on two different occasions for defense with no regrets. They perform flawlessly but are their anything better commercialy? I'm not big on reloading I don't have the patience for it. I'm not wanting to start a debate war about calibers, I just want the best round for my gun. :brickwall:

israel 54: Glad you're ok. It sounds like you deserve a vacation.

I was given two weeks off with pay, and told if I needed any more to feel free and take it. Its only Tuesday and I'm going nuts sitting at the house. I guess this is great for quality time with the family and catching up on the odd things around the house. Thanks again all, take care and be safe-

Georgia Arms has 155 grain gold dot load that's rated at 1300FPS. It comes in a 50 count box and is way cheaper than Buffalo Bore. They call it +P+ but when comes to 40 cal I really thing it's just marketing hype. They are out of components right now but when they come in might be worth a try. It sure is cheaper than Corbon and Buffalo Bore.

Double Tap also makes several excellent loads for a 40. I had the 135 grain DT's in my HD gun until I switched it over to 357 sig. DT makes some real fast loads for 357 sig too.
I've seen GA .40 ammo that was labeled +p, but hadn't seen +p+. I see it now on their website:

I didn't even realize they sold their ammo in boxes. When I've bought new JHP ammo from them at the gun shows, it has always been in sealed plastic bags.

+p or +p+ ? I think it's hype.

Just my 2 cents.

I would also have to agree on the fact that its hype. Yes their are some hot rounds for the .40 S&W but anything marked +p is strictly for marketing. Buffalo Bore has +p marked boxes with the same specs as Double Taps "regular" ammo. So their in no actual +P. I did order the 200rd sampler pack from Double Tap to see what I like and which suits me best. All of the advice is greatly appreciated.

IMO, any ammo marked as +P or +P+, is committing fraud. I thought that the US had some sort of "truth in advertising" law. Maybe Clinton did away with it, after all he didn't know he had sex with someone.

If it's 40 S&W ammo. I forgot to mention that.

Velocity is a plus, but I'm looking for optimum stopping power so I guess weight vs. energy.
JFYI when talking stopping power you want to look at WT+ VEL to = energy. Real fast usually has to give up WT and that costs terminal energy. The Physics of ballistics is the same as any other physics, a good read of Newtons Laws will tell you everything you will ever want to know about whatmakes a good stopping projectile.

I've been doing quite a bit of reading About the kinetic energy and achievement of such and methods in gaining force from it. The reasonable answer I think is going to be 155 gr. or 165 gr. Double Taps. I also got the 135 Gr. Nosler JHP and 180 gr. cont. expansion to try to see how much difference in recoil/ follow up shots and over all penetration and expansion each has.

If the discussion is only about KE, kinetic energy, then you are incorrect. Velocity will affect energy calculations more than weight as it is squared in the calculation.

There is no magic bullet... All handguns suck at killing, and all of that stuff.

These super hot .40 loads will make your gun recoil like there is a pissed off rocket attached to it, and it might give you 5% more "performance" on the terminal end.

Stick with a 180 grain moving around 1000 FPS and you will be just fine.
