Training Day...

Pulled the POW Glock 19M out of the safe. When we finished up...Here was the new duty ammo. All of the 9mm duty ammo I have used in the past 22 years has been 147 Grain.

Federal Hydra Shok in the late 90s.

Speer Gold Dots over the past few years.

I'm sure these are fine. :D (Curious if anyone has experience with this round.)

I'm currently carry the Critical Duty 135 gr FlexLock (non +p) version in my Gen 4 Front Serrations Glock 19s and Gen 3 Glock 26. Works good, accurate, easy to find on shelves.

I have one box of the +P stuff but I have not shot it yet.

My former 9mm duty ammo was the Ranger 127 +p+ T Series.

I really like how well it penetrates, the 135gr +p, I have only shot one wild hog with that load and it was a smaller 120 pounder and the bullet went in behind the front left shoulder across penetrating the heart and exited in front of the right shoulder. It made it through the tough gristle plate on the hog with no problem. It was around a 15 yard shot.

Need to shoot a couple more and also try the 124gr +P Critical Duty out on some piggy's.

Lol.

The first thought that came to mind...

We started issuing these rounds two years ago when we switched to the 9mm Gen 5 G17’s.

I haven’t had any issues, nor have I heard of any problems with reliability.

A lot of the guys don’t care for this ammo. It’s not a big expander at all. It was intended to be a consistent performer through multiple types of barriers and it certainly does that, but it doesn’t expand much even under ideal conditions like bare gel.

I don’t really mind it. I would probably choose a HST or Good Dot if the choice was mine but I don’t lose much sleep over carry ammo.

The department can say whatever they want about how they chose this ammo, but I happen to know for a fact they chose it because Hornady was marketing this ammo heavy at the time and cut them a really good deal on the first 10k round pallet of it.

Now that the initial price is off the table I doubt they will choose it again. It’s not cheap and they have a lot of complaints from the guys about wanting something different.

I dropped a similar sized hog in its tracks with the same load. Also two horses (though that’s not hard to do with a well placed head shot).

Three things I really like about this ammo
1) Best accuracy of any duty type ammo I’ve tested, across multiple pistols
2) Less perceived recoil than other ammo with similar ballistics (fast burn rate powder with loads of flash suppressant?)
3) The cannelure lets me know exactly when a round has been chambered too many times and needs shooting out of the carry rotation.
These are some of the reasons I like the Critical Duty ammo also.

I don't hunt and my only consideration is self-defense. The heaviest round I've ever shot in my 9mm pistols is Federal 135-grain Tactical Bonded +P. I tend to only carry it during winter months. For a long time it was almost impossible to find it but recently seems available at some Internet ammo sites.

I'd shoot a hog with that if the right one presented itself. :D

People, thank you for posting your results when hunting with a carry load. I have been excoriated for doing this on other forums.

Frankly, I like to know what a carry load really does to flesh. IMHO, it is much better than shooting into some Jello.

Has anyone heard what the street results are with this 135 gr +P load?

My friends and I do that also. Wild Hog's are basically a Varmint in NC, they tear up crops like a breaking plow. We are very picky on the shot tho.

Sitting in a blind where we can actually make the shot we want to is Number 1, if we are hunting with dog's it's the 44 or 454 and or my lever action.
