GLOCK 17l GEN 5 CYCLING ISSUES ON BRAND NEW GUN

Hey yall im new here. I recently bought a glock 17L gen 5 MOS. My plan is to build it as a competition gun. I have carried a Glock 30 for years and i am a pretty proficient shooter. I took it to the range for the first time and shot about a 100 rounds of scorpion 115grain ammo sighting in my red dot. I had a few stove pipes but nothing crazy. I just thought it was a brand new gun and had to be broken in. I did clean my gun before taking it to the range for first time. a week goes by and i took it to the range again. I had done a custom stipple job/ put in a extended mag release and the timney alpha completion trigger. I was then plagued with stove pipes! every other round was jamming! I tried different magazines that came with my gun and that didn't help. I then shot a mag of my plus P 147 grain federal ammo and she cycled perfectly fine. I'm thinking that my red dot is adding too much mass to the slide and i need a lighter spring on my guide rod to keep it from jamming. I am currently looking at the only available guide rod that comes with different springs for gen 5 glock, which is the tungsten guide rod kit from the glock store. I was curious if you guys had any insight for me on this problem or if i just got a bad gun. I will post a pic of the current build. I am still planning on either porting or maybe running a comp and then doing a final cerakote. Thanks!

Obviously you need to balance spring rate, slide mass and ammo power at least for proper function. In my experience, 9mm Glocks are definitely not designed to run lighter ammo or to optimize slide balance. These are not important concerns for Glock.

So if you want to adapt a gun to optimize them you'll need to make some changes. Not a big deal.

Verify the screw on the extractor side of of your Holosun optic isn't interfering with the extractor depressor plunger. This is usually the cause of stovepipes when an optic is installed.

Field strip the slide and verify the extractor pivots. If it doesn't pivot, then the screw is too long and it's touching the extractor depressor plunger, preventing the extractor from moving freely. Loosen the screw 2-3 turns and verify the extractor pivots. If it pivots, then you've just confirmed your problem.

You can remove the screw, install a couple of nuts on it, and use the nuts as a guide to file off one or two threads off the tip to shorten it. (Mount the screw in a vise when you file it.) I just had to do that with a Glock 43X MOS and a Holosun HE407K fitted with a C&H MOS adapter plate.

Run your 147gr loads during break in, and stay away from the GS. Their customer service is horrible, and you're lucky it you receive your order in less than 2 weeks if at all!. They allow you to order out of stock items, and then make you wait. Lenny knows his stuff, but he's a shark.
Nice pistol, what's a G17L cost these days? I run a G17L barrel in my G34 sometimes. I don't know it it shoots any better than the G34 barrel, but it kinda looks cool.

yeah I've heard bad things about Glock store but no one else has a gen 5 guide rod with different springs that i can find. It was $720 after taxes. The gen 5 has the GMB which is supposed to be a killer barrel. That's why i was thinking about going the 4 ported way. But i also love the look of that long barrel and compensator. But i can currently find an aftermarket barrel for gen 5 for the 17L. Also that plastic thing on the bottom is prototype i designed and 3D printed. My brother in law is currently making one out of brass for me. I thought having a frame weight was a really good idea and i think it will look sick when its all done and cerakoted.

Fancy, My plan is to build it as a competition gun . Which venue? It's not allowed for IDPA, can be used in USPSA as Limited Optic (Minor) or Open Division (Major, a 125gr going over 1,340fps), but the longer barrel is of no advantage with a dot because it's target focused. Best fit would be Steel Challenge (SCSA).

yeah i found that out later but i fell in love with the 17L. But i was building it for more of a camp thing we do. They do something called "man camp" for a long weekend and we have shooting competitions there. I could never keep up because the only pistol i have had has been my carry Glock 30 and it will never compete with full size pistols. My dad has a full ZEZ 34 which is killer and outshot everybody. So i figured i would try and build one to be able to compete with him.

This thread should have been called "My gun worked great when it was OEM and then I modded it to death and now it doesn't work!."

I doubt this is the problem if you are am experienced shooter but if you have a weak grip that often times causes stovepipe malfunctions.

Soo many people run flashlights on there glocks and have no problem. The bottom fancy thing is a prototype that is just 3d printed and has .003 of tolerance. It isn't squeezing the frame and stays on by two M4 set screws in the bottom. But basically it's a frame weight it adds wieght to the front of your gun with helps with recoil. The captain of the team glock "shane Coley" has one on his competition pistol.

So funny. Using the lightest ammo... Adding a giant weight aka red dot. Changing the trigger which can also induce drag on the slide if it's out of spec. coatings also can make drag. Ambi slide release also if installed incorrectly can cause issues. Pretty gun but stock is the way to go if you wanted to work....

Every gun is different. Just because it happens to work in your dad's, or Shane's or Johnny Glock's, or your previous Glocks-- does not mean that your one sample is going to be the same.

Lot's of variables. You (or your choices: ammo) can be the source of the problem. We are all remote, no touch, guessing-- you could be delta force, or John wick-- but we will still tell you to rule out grip or your thumb brushing the slide on recoil and self inducing a failure. Shooting guns for thirty years can mean doing the same wrong things for thirty years, and never being called on it. IE means squat.

Seems like your ammo is the problem. You either need hotter ammo than what was jamming, or a lighter recoil spring. Personally, I'd go with the ammo that worked, since your recoil spring still has to move the slide with your red dot on it.

Sooo everyone i think I fixed my problem! I went through my gun and field stripped it down. I had my dad go through it with me. Basically I believe my plunger spring was cocked and was causing my ejector not to work properly. I don't know why I didn't catch it sooner! But everything seems to be working properly now. I'm planning on getting to the range and test it this week.

Ejector is in the trigger housing and has nothing to do with the RSA. Extractor is in the slide and has nothing to do with the RSA.

I had a similar issue recently with cheap 115gr that worked its way out after 500 ish rounds of a mix of 147gr and 124gr.

Do a real quick check and slide your backplate off. See if the extractor plunger slides in and out the it’s channel freely. If it does, I would just run a few hundred rounds of 124gr and then go back to 115 to see if it makes any difference.

That spring can be a bugger sometimes, it's a little tricky to screw/insert it into the firing pin safety. I've found than if I get the spring to snap/twist past the little lip near the bottom and fits firmly and stays in GTG. Sounds like yours got a little sideways that could mess with your extractor.
I'm thinking like others have already stated that your problem is/was/could be the ammo, and your thumb touching the slide, if not ever so slightly. You wrote that this is a new gun to you , nice pistol 17L long gun has anyone else shot it? Some how it seems that the slide is being robbed of recoil power. Good luck
