I'm talking run of the mill DUI's, not those that end in exciting high-speed pursuits and or a fight or finding 2 lbs of meth in the back seat, just the boring everyday variety where they blow a 0.10 and/or fail maneuvers. I know of several folks at my agency that won't exactly avoid them, but won't go looking for them either, simply because they are a PITA to process and take you off the street for usually 4+ hours. OTOH, I find them to be very valuable. I consider DUI's to be as much of a threat as many of the other calls we get and time well spent.

What about the rest of you?

A dui is one of the few times we as LE can actually proactively stop someone from killing someone else. Most of our other instances are reactive (we respond to a shooting, a stabbing, a burglary etc). Treat it like an attempted murder case when doing your report and steps. You'll have a much better quality investigation and report.

I used to hunt them. I was quite proficient at them as well. I always got the most satisfaction from getting the .10-.12’s that most officers miss. Any mook can make a .20 or higher.

I see a lot of officers who are really terrible at SFSTs and lack the confidence needed to trust the FSTs.

When I was younger and a real headhunter I got very proficient at the DUIs and the whole process was streamlined. I could often make 2 a night.

It’s much harder now. The state’s implied consent laws have not kept up with the decline in alcohol use and the rise of drug and combined DUI. The law and court is not on my side proving a drug DUI case.

3/5 of the last DUIs I made at crash scenes blew low for alcohol but showed impairment from some other substance.

I respond to college parties now and everyone there is ****ed up but not a can of beer in sight. Pills and drugs are the norm more so than alcohol now in the college scene.

EVERYONE smokes weed now. When I was in college it was a relatively small stoner crowd that smoked the weed. Your average college student didn’t do it that often or at all. It’s very popular now with everyone.

Personally I hated working traffic.

The exception being DUI and idiots driving willful, wanton and reckless. Those got my full attention.

Not really fond of talking about this subject but since you asked...

My first was twenty years ago. I had been doing some oxy's and xanny bars prior to getting my first Lynyrd Skynrd tattoo and got blue lighted because I supposedly crossed the center line. It was a total screw job.

My second one was nineteen years ago when me and Peaches left The Country Club Bar and Saloon after getting cozy on the dance floor. I was all set to become baby daddy number four when the PoPo who was baby daddy number two blue lighted me for no damn reason. They said I was drunk and claimed they found two ounces of Tennessee's finest ice in the center console. I almost did some real-time over that one.

I made it about three years before catching DUI number three after a fun-filled day of Bud's on the pontoon boat. I accidentally ran the boat into the dock at the marina and the Wildlife cop claimed I was drunk but I refused the breathalyzer, so he was lying his ass off and couldn't prove I was drunk and I only failed the FST's because I was sea sick.

I caught DUI number four about ten years ago after crashing my Dodge Charger through the front of the Dollar Tree. The cops asked for my license but I tried to explain to them that I wasn't driving, I was traveling, so it can't be a DUI and there is no law against Traveling Under the Influence. They tried to tell me I was full of **** but I educated them on the law and my rights. My attorney wouldn't file the appeal until I paid him another 10K, which I didn't have, so the state screwed me on that one.

I guess you ride a bike now?

I got great DUI hunting ability. I could call the results before they blow, i.e. "this one is a .13" and they'll blow a .13. If I had a DUI who did not reach my expectations I knew they had another substance in them.

They’re on the priority scale like everything else. Patrol can/should work them when there’s nothing more important to do. Traffic units will do well to have a dedicated unit for them. Detectives ought to call them in if they see them when out and about and assist/pass off as their time and priorities allow.

I made a DUI arrest on a bicyclist. He was falling over in traffic; blew .238%
If I hadn't have had the gum in my mouth I only would have blown a .02%!!!

Funniest one I ever saw was a DUI on a riding lawnmower, even included a pursuit.

Officer pulls the guy over then ends up having to chase him down on foot.

He never lived that one down.
