G41....How Many Have One?? Thinking of Getting One over Another 1911.

Hey all,

I'm gonna start going bowhunting for feral hogs here in Texas. I found out the other day that most of the public lands that I have to use have no closed season and any legal means can be used to take them. That means HANDGUNS....A-OK!! WOO HOO!!
I've wanted to hunt hogs with a handgun for a long time.

When I had this confirmed for me last week I immediately thought about getting a "beater" 1911 that I could add parts to and make it the way I want it. Nothing serious like machining or welding up the frame and stuff, just a 1911 that I wouldn't mind getting dirty, wet, nasty, scratched up and so forth. I figured that it would cost about $500-600.

Then I thought "why not pick a new Glock 41?" It's 45ACP, has a 5 inch barrel, doesn't matter what environment it's in it'll work, and I can use it as a new HD piece. If I get that new one with the optical mount option, that's just another plus for it.
I thought not only would it make a nice hunting pistol with that red dot on it, but add a nice weapon light and leave the red dot on it and that would make one helluva Home Defense pistol.

I went out the other day trying to see one that I could handle. No one had one around me. I'm gonna keep checking this week and see what I can find.

I'd like to hear what you all think of them. I haven't seen much written about them. Are there any others out there that use theirs for hunting? I would mainly have mine as a backup to my longbow and recurve, but after a while I would certainly take it out and try to take a hog with it too.

I know a 10mm would be much better and that new 6 inch barrel version, the Model 40 would be ideal, but I like the 45acp and I've read and talked to many hunters here that have had no problems with hogs being taken with the 45ACP. Provided it's loaded with good ammo like the stuff from Buffalo Bore and the like.
Besides, I don't want to have to add another caliber that I have to buy ammo for and 10mm is expensive. If I had a reloading bench, it would be a more likely possibility.

Thoughts?

I just picked up my G41MOS and installed a Vortex Razor on it. I think it is going to become a quick favorite. I have a S&W 1911 competition model and it is a great piece, but it also single stack, more ammo on hand in the Glock. The Vortex is nice and wide and quick to get on target on the range so far. I would definitely choose the G41 over my 1911 right now (Let the fire storm begin ). I also shoot both the G20 and 21, both Gen III's and both with TRL-2's slung on them. You are correct about the 10mm being an awesome round for pure knock down power but it is expensive and harder to find ammo, thankfully I reload! Hope this rambling may have helped a little.

Buy it. You will like it. I like mine and am making some minor mods to get it ready for use.

People will tell you that the 41 has a little more muzzle flip than the heavier 21 in the same caliber. I own both, and in my experience the recoil impulse on the 41 is not "snappier". It is a very controllable, well mannered .45. I also love the fit, with the correct backstrap, it is easy to really get behind that low bore axis. Also the trigger is very smooth with the classic Glock reset, and my finger falls just where I want it to.

Basically I love the fit and function of this gun. If you like Glock, and you like .45, you will like the 41. Hog hunting one with an optic would be a riot!

Get a G21, then get a .460 Rowland barrel for it.

Best 45ACP pistol that I've ever owned is the G41!

Wicked accurate, soft shooting, and thinner slide than the G21. (which means it fits holsters designed for the G34, etc)

Mine has a TLR-1 mounted under it, and lives on the nightstand at night.

But....I'd still get a 10mm for hog hunting!!

I have a 41 as well. I love it. I agree with most statements above about the recoil being mild and not too snappy. Its very accurate, and its just all around fun to shoot. Its also got the legendary Glock reliability as well.

Pick one up, and you will be happy.....

I had to give up 1911s after nearly 40 years of carrying and shooting them. Arthritis prevents me from using the high thumb on the safety grip that is second nature after all that time.

Got a G41 last year and it completely satisfies my need for a full size 45 ACP. Really pleased with it and think Glock should change all their 45 ACP models to the thin slide and barrel configuration of the 36, 30S and 41 (and go 4th Gen grip and mag release as well - lol).

If you've talked yourself out of the G40 MOS, then the G41 MOS would be your next best option.

A bit unfortunate though, because the G40 MOS would be hands down the ultimate Texas Hog slayin' pistol.

Just sayin'!

Have a Gen 3 G21 and a new G41. Like the G21 better especially the larger grip, it just fits my hand better even though the 41 has multiple back straps.

Initially had a few trigger reset issues with the 41. Polished the trigger bar and connector and made sure the trigger spring was straight which solved the problem. Took the Dremel to the bump on the trigger bar where it contacts the safety plunger. This along with a 4 lb striker spring and reduced power plunger spring greatly improved the trigger. No light strikes with Winchester and Federal primers.

Put on Sevigny sights with FO front, very accurate pistol!

Oh no doubt about that one at all!! Totally agree with ya!

The problem is that I don't reload yet and it may be a while before I do. Adding the 10mm to the ammo that I would have to keep around would be a pain and especially hard on the wallet! That stuff is EXPENSIVE, especially they hunting varieties. If I reloaded, I'd have it at the top of the list.

Besides, I've seen a lot of videos and talked to many that use the 45acp while hog hunting and have dropped many hogs with it. It might not be the "drop-in-their-tracks" round that the 10mm is, but I am hoping I'd never have to use it in an emergency on a hog and that when I do use it on a hog it would be in a controlled, well aimed shot from a shooting stick.

I mainly worry about the 2-legged threats in the woods that I might run into while hog hunting in the public lands of Texas. Sam Houston National Forest is 45minutes outside Houston, 25 minutes north of me, and is 105,000 acres of wilderness. I talk back and forth with bow hunters all the time chasing these hogs and hear all kinds of creepy stuff.

I've had people tell me that I have to really watch where I park my vehicle cause they have had friends come back after being in the field to find their truck gone or stripped, windows busted out and everything stolen inside, wheels gone or just destroyed for no reason at all. I've heard that stuff.

You know how many illegals and other unsavory characters are in the Houston area? Neither do I, but rest assured there are a WHOLE lot more of them than there are of you and I. These ner-do-wells are never too tired to take advantage of someone they see that's vulnerable. I've even been told that Sam Houston and other public lands are perfect places used for METH making, dope exchanges and other criminal activities. So....mainly I am much more worried about those kinds of threats than with the hogs or snakes. Oh, did I mention I HATE SNAKES?

But that's my main motivation for the 45acp.

I'd love to have a 10mm though.

Thanks all.

I just got to shoot my new G41 yesterday and love it. Found it similar to my 21, although I have installed a new trigger on the 21 and so that DID feel a lot different. I have to agree with you on the 10mm costing more to shoot. I do reload for mine and that is the only way I can keep myself in ammo for it. It is an awesome round and the 20 is an awesome gun, but you will find the 41 just as accurate and for where your going with it, it will be all the protection you need. Just remember to practice practice practice :)

Very valid points.

I have a G41, and like taking it out to the range quite a bit! After you get yours, start reading the GT Reloading forum--I received great advice there, and was loading my ammo a lot sooner than I thought I would be. You will definitely be shooting a lot more the sooner you can get setup.

I have no problem with the Glock 41 without the attachable optic. If shooting in the dark, both a red dot and a coaxial high intensity light would be an idea. I don't remember Texas law in this regard. Also, I just bought a 10mm barrel for mine. The advantage is a higher sectional density projectile. A 200 grain 10mm has nearly the same section density as a 255 grain 45 Colt, which I have personally shot side to side through both of a 250 pound pig's shoulders. There are several 255 grain loads for a 45 ACP.
