Looking for feedback from G40 owners . Give me the good and the bad please .
Reliable ? Any BTF ?
I reload so price and availability of the ammo won't be a problem.
Thanks in advance.

It's obviously made for one thing and one thing only - hunting, with all that extra length. Of course if that's what you want it for, it's by NO means a disadvantage at all. :) That was the only thing I could tell when I was looking at getting a G20.

The good thing is there are plenty of holsters out there now compared to when it first hit, be it most of them custom made though.

I'd say it's no different than wanting a larger caliber revolver in an extended length, with the same purpose of hunting in mind. If that's what you're after, then she's perfect for it. :)

I was looking more for something more powerful for defensive purposes for large game beyond what my G21 could do power wise. I don't hunt with a handgun specifically and my needs were not distance with a handgun at least, so I stuck with the regular G20. But I'm also sure most of these thing are non-issues to you if you're already looking at the G40 in the first place too?

Good luck! :)

I have a different take. I enjoy shooting the long slide Glocks (G34, G35) and find the G40 to be my favorite. With older eyes, the MOS (Leupold DeltaPoint on mine) is a godsend. Not a concealed carry choice by any means, but I would have no problem using it for home defense.

For protection against 4-legged (and 2-legged) creatures in the great outdoors, 15 rounds of 10mm beats 6 rounds of .44 Magnum, at least until you get to the bigger bears. Then 5-6 rounds of .454 Casull or better comes into the equation.

To your specific questions, 100% reliable, no BTF.

It will be so much fun to shoot, you'll spend a lot of money on ammo.
You will start to see how reloading could make it easier to shoot more
And then you'll spend more money on reloading equipment, and supplies.
Then you'll see how a progressive press will make reloading in bulk even faster
Those presses cost even more, etc, etc, etc.

But other than that, it's all great......

I've had a 20SF and 29SF for years and love the guns. Easier to shoot than a 40 as well. Anytime I take one to the range, they always seem to draw a crowd as they really make noise and you can feel the concussion when the thing goes off. Very reliable round, and the Glock's function seamlessly. Considering I seldom shoot these, I haven't seen the need for a 40. Try a 20 and if you're feeing it, then purchase a 40.

I like both. I added 10mm to my collection. Here is G20 gen 4 and G40 MOS grey frame respectively:

Here is G40 MOS:

I would recommend either gun. So, it's up to you what you want and what you are gonna do with it. I love the long slide Glocks almost as much as G21 and G19 and G26 LOL. The .45 auto Glocks are must have as well as 9mm. Then 10mm is logical next step, then .357.

The long slide is great as a woods gun and plinker. It was made for the woods. G20 is nothing to sneeze at either. Love my 10's and .45's and 9's and .357's and Smith .44 mags LOL

I like OWB and shoulder carry for standard size. The G20/21 will fit my 40/41 and my G17/19 will fit my 17L, 34. I had them made with opening. And my 30's all fit same OWB/shoulder holsters.

I like leather. He (holster maker) is in S.C. He uses english harness leather; will last three lifetimes if cared for. I have mine color coded black/mahogany for caliber (small/large bore). I also use Galco Pro holsters made from horse hide.

The G40 is one of my favs, however, I carry my G20 more often but only because it’s my beater and does not have the fancy red dot sight. If I plan to hunt I will use the G40, I don’t know if it’s the longer barrel or the sight radius but I shoot my G35 and G40 better than my shorter G17, G21, G22 and G20. Plus when kicking around the mountains I personally would rather carry a Glock 10mm than my 629 S&W just because of the extra compacity and easier to have an extra full mag. Not sure where you live but here in Colorado, 10mm will drop moose, bear and kitties. Big magnums are fun but the 10mm Glocks seem to disappear on my belt and the big heavy revolvers always remind you they are there. Plus I’m ready with my G40 if one of those pesky hogs shows up on our border.

I think the long barrel on the g40 would get hung up in the trees.Another vote for the g20.
<LOL> Yep, true statement. I can't hardly move in our woods with my G40. Am considering cutting the barrel off and making it a carbine...

Need to correct my failing memory about the Safariland holster that I have that may suit your needs.
It is the Safariland 578 GLS Pro Fit {stock no. 578-683-411}
This is a universal fit holster that will fit by their claim of over 175 different handguns. It still provides a very secure fit and the GLS retention is activated by the middle finger as you acquire your grip without even having to think about manipulating a button or thumb break. I just ordered another one so I can have one dedicated to my 40 S&W Glocks and another for the G40. Once the adjustments are made it will fit my 27, 23, 22, 35 and 24. It comes with a paddle and belt mounting hardware and will fit belts up to 2 1/4 inches [$42.09]
Optics Planet is having a 10% off sale and free ship on orders over $50.00 today only.

With all that extra length, it's definitely built for one thing and one thing only: hunting. Of course, if that's what you want it for, that's not a problem at all. :) When I was looking into acquiring a G20, that was the only thing I could tell.
The good news is that there are a lot more holsters available now than there were when it first came out, albeit most of them are custom built.

I'd say it's no different than wanting a larger calibre revolver with a longer barrel for the same hunting reason. If that's what you're looking for, she's ideal.
I used to own a G40 that I bought for deer hunting and then sold. For some reason, I like shooting with my G20 gen 3 camera. For my G20, I purchased a 6 inch Hunter barrel as well as some Trijicon HD XR sights. Without a question, the G40 is a cool gun, but I like the G20's handling.
