Federal 36 grain vs. Remington Golden bullet

A while back I stumbled onto a few packs of the Remington golden bullet .22, specifically the 225 round boxes. I had thought that it was perhaps time for a really good cleaning of my pre Model 18. When loading one or more cartridges would need a fair amount of a push to go all the way into the cylinder. But no extraction issues. I love to tell you this revolver has a faint turn line but it is only honest to suggest that the faint turn line is mostly because there is a faint touch of blue left. So I of course opted for the lazy choice and squirted something in the cylinders that resembled lubricant. CLP, WD40, Publix extra virgin olive oil; something like that. The problem was not solved at my next range visit.

So a couple weekends ago I broke out the 617. It was also difficult to load and it appeared appreciably cleaner than my other older one.

Last weekend when I was done, I was down to two or three cartridges left in the Remington Golden Bullet box so today I opened up a box of the Federal .36 grain (550 bulk round stuff.) Amazingly the difficult loading has disappeared. However with the Remington I do not believe I had a single misfire with a couple boxes of the stuff. With the Federal today I had a couple misfires which did not fire on a second attempt but did fire after turning the round a bit in the cylinder.

Well, lotsa folks don't like Golden Bullets. Also, Remington came out with a "new and improved" version of them a couple of years ago. I hear less harping get about them now, but it's certainly possible yours were some left over "old new stock" or "new old stock" or whichever it is.

I have some now, and they seem to work fine in my 22's. Again, a lot of other shooters shy away from them.

I have had very poor results with the Golden Bullet. Jams in my semi autos, dirtier than normal even for rimfire, lousy accuracy in some of my guns, and it does not load in the chambers of my Ruger SP101 after a few cylinders full. QC of the Golden Bullet seems to be very poor.

I much prefer CCI Blazer .22 or Federal Champion.

I have half an old bulk pack of Golden Bullet from years ago. I never finished it up because it was so crappy but a few weeks ago its all I had and tried some. I remembered very quickly why I never finished shooting it.

Golden Bullets always always work fine in my Ruger 22's. The Remington Thunderbolts and their Cyclone cousins leave so much lead in the barrels (!!!) that it's a wonder there's anything left to hit the target! Anything CCI never seems to disappoint. I was lucky I stocked up a lot of 22 ammo a few years ago (fortunately before the drought...) so I still have a good bit. But it sure is hard to find for when my supply gets low.

Tried the Remington's and my guns did not like them, so I have settled on two types of .22 LR;

CCI Stinger 32g Copper plated HP
Federal Champion 36g Copper plated HP (bulk packs)

Love em both and they shoot just fine out of my Savage Mark II & Colt 1911 Gold Cup .22LR

Never had a problem with either Remington or Federal. I shoot them out of a Heritage single action, a S&W M&P 22 and a Marlin model 60. If I had any negative comment about the two it would be in regard to accuracy. Shoot some CCI after Remington or Federal and you will notice a difference. You pay a bit more for the better accuracy of CCI.
