Howdy,

Alot depends on the type of ammo.

I have killed a whitetail deer with a .45acp at 35yds. I fired two shots and both hit him in the left side just behind the shoulder and lodged against the ribs on the otherside. Deer took a few steps and the fell. Got up and ran about 50 feet and feel again and never got up.

The load was a handload using an Hornady 200gr XTP-HP w/ Blue Dot powder at around 1,100 ft/sec.

I would bet that some of the commerical 230gr +P loaads would reliably kkill a man out to 100yds.

I don't know why you would want to shoot someone at 100yds, especially w/ a pistol.

9mm? I would not recomend you shooting anything bigger than a pissant w/ a 9mm, so, decide how far away you can hit a pissant and go from there.

Thinking a little... I recall a story about a guy who shot a 7 lb. turkey, wrapped in denim, with a .22 LR @ 300 yds. Several shots went through. 9mm and .22 LR have similar ballistics, for trajectory and velocity and BC. I've read accounts of LE dropping bad guys at 68 and 72 yards with 9mm service guns. The previous poster can say what he wants, but if we get into an altercation, I guess I'll call him a piss ant.

Good info!
Thanks!

So like what kind of scenario are you pondering? I have a G17, and a .357 Mag currently. To me, pistols are a defensive weapon, if I need a weapon, otherwise, they are a gun for me to shoot and enjoy. Either round should be effective to 25-40 yards, beyond which I have other dedicated guns.

well, if you don't have any other gun on you, you may have to make do..

according to a brief internet search, a 9mm bullet will travel 2500 yards if fired at the right angle. it's going 350 fps at that point. probably not lethal, but would leave a welt.
say 1000 yard max lethal range.

obviously accuracy would be out of the equation at this point.

9mm can kill at few hundreds of yards.
30 years ago when I was in military training, we were sitting under a shade made of camouflage net having a first aid lesson.
Suddly, one of the guys, kind of collapsed.
The instructor said "can someone wake up this guy?", we were all exausted because of the training.
When we reached the guy, we found that he was dead.

He was hit by a stray round, at the intersection between the neck and the shoulder. The wound wasn't that deep, but deep enough to puncture a major blood vessle.

After investigation of this wierd case by the military police (there was no live fire training nearby at this place) it was found that:

There was a group of tank crew training at the shooting range few hundreds of yards from the place we were having our class.
One of the soldiers AD when disarming his UZI - forgot to remove the magazine (in the 70's UZI SMG was a standard issue of tank crew members). According to IDF regulations you disarm and discharge your weapon in angle of 60 degrees, and this what this soldier did. The round did its ballistic arc and hit this soldier in the class by random.

I think any of the pistol calibers are still going to be very deadly at 100 yards and beyond----in other words, way beyond "self-defense" range.

Yeah, 45ACP can inflict some serious damage on deer sized game at short distances.

I think most modern handgun rounds 9mm and larger can cause a fatal wound at the distance where you can still see your target clearly to "know" who or what you are shooting at.
Sorry about not going along with the actual question, just wanted to be sure someone said this.
