The “ rule” part of the 21 feet started as a “rule” when guys would shoot the man with the knife and explain: “ He was within 21 feet.” It was meant to say you need at least 21 to have a reaction time but morphed into something else.
And some people forget it’s 21 feet for reaction time from a HOLSTERED gun. And if a guy rushes you within that distance, other techniques might work better. The problem is most academies don’t teach any effective knife disarm techniques or empty hand defenses against weapons .
You go right ahead. I dislike knife wounds. I will shoot deadly threats. I have dealt with 3 edged weapons bare handed. I was young, and lucky. 1 was timid. Let’s toss. 2nd was broken window glass, gripped in hand. Kick to hand (he didn’t anticipate that) caused him serious injury, aggression gone. The serious one. He threatened too close to me. I got his knife hand with both of mine. I then boxed him out into wall until he had enough. As I said I was young, lucky. What if he had small knife in other hand? What if he was quick? With many people I would have many holes in me. (And that’s when I was at my best)
options are great. You might be unarmed, can’t shoot. Deadly threat gets deadly response
